sound system
okay so i purchased an 05 evo 8 with the sound, sun, leather package only because i wanted HID's and since i work there i got it cheap but the sound system sucks! only 300 some watts, no mp3! whereas the 06 eclipse is somewhere around 700-800 watts! whats up with that!!
what do i need to do to get that wattage up? new sub, new amp, or new stereo? basically what will help for now until i decide to replace the entire system? thanks

I guess the addition of a bigger amp and larger sub enclosure would add some weight, but you could keep that minimal.

Again, I find it so humorous how concerned people are with what others spend their money on.
My first post and already I'm impressed at how quickly original topics get lost in favor of arguing.
If you're looking for quality sound and not just high SPL and rattling everything...
Your question, head unit is the only way to get the feature adds you're looking for. MP3 etc... Increase in output isn't that important since your factory 6 1/2"s aren't going to draw that much anyway. I've got audiobahn from front to back, minus the stock 6 1/2s, all the features and great sound quality. HUs range from $150~$450 Your feature list prolly ~$300.
Car speaker wattages aren't that important either. There's a lot more great quality lower wattage speakers out now that will compete well with a lot of higher power ones. Honestly I can't imagine even having to replace the stock 6 1/2"s.
In the trunk I've got an 800 RMS (2x400 2 Ohm) watt Audiobahn amp and 2 10" 400W RMS (2 ohm) Audiobahn performance series subs. $500 is probably one of the cheaper and most enjoyable mods you'll do on your car. Again, as mentioned by someone else earlier custom enclosure is entirely self contained with amp-- disconnect power, ground, remote and RCAs, 5 wires total, 45 seconds, and the whole thing lifts out.
I talk up audiobahn and am definitely a fan, but really you can't really go wrong with a well matched setup from almost any top level company. That said I haven't sat in a car and been more impressed with sound quality and the level hard bass. SPL cars are a waste of money and sound like crap IMO. As for manufacturers some are more proprietary than others. Don't buy any one Sony piece unless you want to buy all Sony. Alpine, Audiobahn, JVC, and Pioneer are some of the more compatible brands. JL a little less but damn good if you really want the boom.

How about this option?
As I said, I have an Alpine CDA 9813 HU. It's in perfect condition and it's a great HU. I removed it from my '03 EVO VIII when I traded it for my MR. I have everything needed to install it including the wiring harness adaptor and it's ready to go in. I even have the fuse block needed to hook up the power to the battery (you must do this because it's a high power unit). It even comes with the remote which I did not show in the picture. It's perfect for MP3s and CDs. I'll make you a good deal on it if you want it....

$200 shipped is a good price, and it's a great HU. It does a great job of equalizing when you've got subs connected. Lots of features, but 60W to your stock 6 1/2"s will almost certainly blow them, if not imediately then over time. Sucks not being able to turn your head unit up enough to really drive the subs. The extra fused power cable sounds like a PITA.
A new Alpine 9843 is only $170, has MP3 playback and is only 45Wx4 peak, probably safe for the speakers. RMS in the low to mid 20s means around half to three quarters you'll move the stock speakers well.
Also I recommend not going over 800W - 1000W RMS amp & sub.
if you are just going to put a new radio and keep the factory speakers, I will suggest to you to buy the best you can get.
I started with just the radio and factory speakers and the sound was very good for just a radio.>>600 OTD installed
I have a different one now but you get the idea
look at my sig for pics and a link to the old thread.
