Snow and the stock Yoko's
Ok, So it's snowing in Cincinnati today, and I am at work. I still have the stock yoko's on the car.... We are not expecting but less than an inch and some ice. Should I be worried about the drive home?
Can these tires do ok in light to no snow and a little ice if your really careful? Any comments....?
Thanks, J.P.

The Stockers SUCK in the snow... I left the house with a little over a dusting last year (maybe a quarter inch of snow) And I almost crashed into my wife's car leaveing my drive way. The Car just did not turn.
All I hear about the stock ADVANS in the snow is very bad.... I don't know about snow, but I can definitely tell you that in cold, moist or wet weather, they are frightening. I think the cold affects them very negatively. I just changed them to the Conti Extreme Contacs yesterday. I definitely recommend you put some all weather or winter tires on the EVO....

If there isnt a lot of snow u will be just fine just as long as u dont had ANY TORQUE to the wheels. Ive drivin in very light snow and i didnt have to much trouble. Just be EXTREMELY careful to your speed. Breaking is a challange with thoughs tires and ABS on.
I did it for a year. It wasnt too bad. I never ran into any problems. The only downfalls were the tires were like rocks until they warmed up. Ice at 5mph will cause a loss of transaction when turning.
I am from Missouri and last year I drove my car in the snow and ice with the stock advans. Apply some common sense when driving. Consider your distance before you even go, time of the day is also important. Some advice I can give you are always keep your distance like 1/4 just to be safe on the freeway. You're ABS will always kick in when you break with the stock tire setup, never pump your brakes. Dont ever I repeat dont ever go pass 3000RPM. The main thing is just used common sense, I drove mine all winter and I survive and I will be doing the same thing this winter

Also, Advans don't just suck in the snow, they suck in temps lower than 40F. So don't drive too aggressive in cold dry days too.
I drive in ohio same as you and havent had a problem yet. Yes they suck very bad. Yes keep your distance and brake using the engine. The large brembos are to powerful and will get you out of control quickly. The advans make for very fun driving.
For ice you need a dedicated snow/ice tire to do anything.

I drove the other day in a couple of inches of snow on top of ice on completely treaded advans and they were slippery as hell, burt as long as you are careful, slow down before turns, keep out of boost, and keep your distance from the car ahead of you, it will be fine. Just make sure you do something about the tires soon as you don't want to make a habit of this driving. I put Blizzak WS-50s on in the winter and the car is amazing. Don't stress about it and be careful.
I cannot believe what Im reading. People will spend over 30 grand on a car, thousands in mods, and yet drive in the winter on almost R compound summer tires. That just does not make any sense to me. Tires are the only thing keeping your vehicle on the road, dont go cheap. I seriously cannot believe how many people risk winter with the Advans.....
Do yourself a favor and go by a set of Blizzaks or equal winter tire. The $600 you spend will be alot less than the bill for putting your Evo in a ditch. Yes some people have gotten away without them in winter, but do you really want to take a chance?

Or get a cheap beater car to drive in the winter.
It's just not the tire problem driving the Evo in the snow/winter, its all the freaking salt and sand that they dump on the roads every single time we get a dusting in Ohio. Hey EvoElFreako, I am also in Lebanon, down off Bunnel Hill/48. Take it easy today/tonight out on the roads.
