any one tried an engine swap

I was wondering if any one had tried to swap the engine from a US lancer with an Evo engine? I am about to order one with a tranny and all the goodies and stab it in my car. Any suggestions?

Newbie forum ahoy. Anyone try running a search? There are COUNTLESS threads on this subject. My suggestion: have a lot of money, cuz it's not gonna happen cheap.

Check the link in Lan Evo's signature. He's our resident engine swap question guy.

You'd think with a member number of #3493 that the ol' search function would have been apparent. At the very least the numerous threads regarding an engine swap surely would have surfaced once or twice during that time period. Never the less, as Hobie stated very cost prohibitive. Might as well sell OZ and spend the dough on an Evo.

well the egine/tranny is not that bad on the price really. I can get it here in 7 days for 3500$ I can stab the engine and assemble it no promblem. The good thing is that it comes with every thing ecu and all. I have got some great AZN connections . Im just wondering if any one has tried it before or if I am the person breaking the ice.

If you have read my FAQ (I assumed you didn't, since you missed out some very important info), you will find out that the EVO (2nd phase) 4G63 motor/tranny/AWD won't just drop right into your Lancer. In order to keep the AWD system, you will have to cut the rear floor panel (with fuel tank) and put in an AWD EVO part...

Cutting/welding doesn't come cheap and easy for this kind of project.

Again, like I put it numerous times, if you have another car, and enough time and money to back you up, it might not be a bad idea. It's your money and your decision to make...

OK, I just read your other post regarding this topic...

The EVO III engine is the first phase 4G63, with an opposite orientation compared to your Lancer engine...you will have to go thru a lot more frabrication = more $$$

There is a reason the car has been out for two MY's and still nobody's on here braggin about the 4g63T swap. Because it's not cost effective and it's fairly difficult technically speaking. You will not be able to use most DSM/Evolution parts and you will not be able to use most Lancer parts. The cost of future custom mods alone is more than discouraging enough for me to ever advise it to your average Joe Tuner.

Ya I know that the awd wont work that is too much $$$ for meee! haha well for the moment. I am just trying to get set up for that mod later on down the road. I am planning to drop just the engine and tranny in with out the transfer case, driveline, or rear drive axle. I would just get an engine but my bud in JP says its just cheeper and that the 270hp evo engine would prolly ruin the USversion transmission. I am just wondering if any one had done any sort of engine swap before and if they had any success? Any help and support is welcomed. I have a wiring harness ready for the engine and I think I know where I can get a totaled out evo for parts. I am really going to do this I just don't have any support from any one. Every body is like "uhh ya bro ya on yur own on this one" Maybe Im crazy

If money is an issue to you (who doesn't ) and you're emptying your pocket for this swap, I would not recommend that. See you will run into different kind of trouble during the swap.

However, If you're going to do this, you will have to revamp your front suspension, front axles to mate with the EVO tranny, you can weld the center diff dead and make it FWD...but you still need those goodies.

In addition, you'll need brakes, fuel systems, custom-made engine mounts....given that you have the right (EVO IV-VIII) engine.

I guess I'm being realistic and just sharing the info that I gather during the 3-4 years I researched on this topic. I'm not saying I know everything about this convertion...I am not....

Exactly, with the EVO Arrived, an 4G63 powered Lancer just give you a bragging right....it is not on par in terms of performance/handling/body strength with the EVO. And the worst thing is...it almost costs the same.

However, if you're looking for some old Mirage as project cars, it would make more sense, since the car is cheaper....

so like ordering a later gen evo engine like say a V,VI, or even VII would actually work. My friend Joe is sending me engine mounts he says when replacing the stock ones that the engine will fit. I mean this kit comes with everything from the front of the car back. I thought this was a good deal but maybe I should look at somthing more practicle. I am looking for an engine swap really, mainly becaus I find the US lancer's engine to be pretty gutless. The pistons(from what I have read and asked people) are not suitable for high hp, and will throw or get damaged some how if I turbo charge my car. Do you know of any engines that I could swap in the lancer that is built stout like say a eclipse gst engine(I know these wont fit worth a damn not even jap stuff) But do you see where I am getting. I am looking for an engine to get about 300hp out of safely. Money is not much of an option but I do want a reasonable mod and not anything just crazy. HELP any body? free beer?

It really depends on what kind of output number you're looking for and THEN you choose which path to go...

If you're looking for ~50% improvement in hp, a well-tuned turbo kit with low boost should work wonders on the 4G94. Hey, that's almost 200hp.

However, if you're determined to keep the Lancer and get some serious performance out of it, then you might want to see if the 2nd phase 4G93T (1.8 turbo engine from Lancer GSR) OR turbocharging the NA DOHC 4G93 (1.8)...Both of these engine have the same engine code, but very different. They're available overseas

or you can jus save yourself a hell lot of trouble and get forged rods and pistions with a turbo kit for the 4G94...this will be plenty of power for you.
