Lancer Ralliart or Civic SI... i dont kno man watever u prefer
If u get an Evo... jus drive it with care and respect it. Research on it b/c its a real fast car.
U dont have the knowledge to drive stick... so take some school's lessons on drivin manual.

Jus watever u do, first get to kno ur car. Drive it safe and take care of it. Get the feeling of drivin... and also ull see the other ***** drivers here in the US who drive like ****. Jus drive it slow.. i kno its REAL hard but for the first 1000 miles ( take it easy)

Plan on spending $1000/month keeping an evo insured, gased up, and maintained. What I am saying is don't do it. I know it sounds like a great idea and you want it so bad, but no. Buy something cheap to run and maintain that you really don't give a $hit about. Like a civic. Concentrate on school and having fun. If you get to college and you still care about what car is parked outside than you are not having a good enough time. I have loved cars my entire life as well but you will find that there are things in life that are more fun, don't cost as much money, and don't leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere in the dark.

PS. I love my evo.

I agree, get yourself a Eclipse/Laser/Talon. Any of these cars will give you the thrill and they can be as fast as the Evo.

If you get a AWD Eclipse you can't go wrong on that. I don't think you should get the Evo yet, the insurance can be very expensive specially for your gae, for your experience and for the type of car.

The Eclipses are as sleeper as they can be...

Guys...he's in a 28k price range, not a 10k price range... a second gen turbo is an awful idea...First, they are old now with tons of miles...you have no idea who did what to them, and frankly, ive owned 4, and they arent that reliable...Get yourself a 4 door standard car or if you want sporty, get an Si or something similar.

Hey man i was reading through the thread and i saw you talking about the insurance. I am 18 and i will own a new IX MR coming Jan-Feb. I am doing almost the same as you, the car is going to be under my parents name. My insurance company is Progressive. I have one ticket, but my parents have had a clean record. Anyways the insurace is going to cost me $150 a month, which really isnt that bad, and if your parents are going to pay for the car then you shouldnt have a problem. But you need to take into consideration all the maitnence, tires, clutch....etc.

Toyota Scion-lowered,rims,exhaust. It is not too expensive, will last forever, and easy to maintain. A major advantage is other college kids won't screw with it.
If your planning on holding a full time job- get the evo, but take a performance driving course first(it is expensive but cheaper than a totaled evo)

I am leaning towards either an Evo or an Sti but I am sure the insurance is going to be high. i am right now in college so a job during college hours might not pay that well. My parents might chip in but I would like to know estimates for the insurance. Thank you for your help.

I am very happy to be joining your community as I am a huge fan of evos and stis.
Fuc|< the EVO... go with the new GSX-R 1000.... those things will do the 1/4 mile in under 10 sec stock... plus they're under 11K, so the money you'll save you can spend on the outrageously expensive insurance each month, which will undoubtedly be more than the bike payment.

Seriously, I realize how tempting it is to spend the total dollar amount that your parents said they'd spend... but you should be looking into getting the new Si, RSX-S, or one of its cousins. TRUST ME, you will be way too tempted by the speed of either the STI or the EVO and end up either getting yourself expensive tickets (which you said you can't really afford) or wrecking it (which hopefully doesn't involve death) Now what you don't realize is how expensive it is to maintain these cars... brakes, tires, tune-ups, the CLUTCH! (which will go out around 25K miles) You probably won't have the time to fix these things yourself, so you'll be paying someone else to do it, which will be difficult especially if you're only working part-time and already having to pay for expensive insurance. Mitsubishi's aren't exactly known for their reliablity, which would also not deem this car to be very well suited for a college student.
I would really look into getting the new civic SI or an RSX-S, anything else that is going to be a little more reliable, practical & affordable..... I know, I know, RELIABLE and PRACTICAL aren't exactly the words that a college freshman wants to hear when his parents tell him they'll pay 28K for a new car. Get the EVO once you're done with school... you'll have the money to spend on it and play with it.... and you'll be happy you waited in the end.

I am surprised that nobody suggested a late model wrx. They are much more manageable for a teen, still have the safety of AWD, and IMO would be a good starting point for a kid who has aspirations of driving a high performance car. Maintenance and insurance on the wrx should be reasonable as well.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but I agree, EVO or STi is too much.

I dont understand why everyone's getting all wrapped up in maintenence costs, insurance costs, gas costs and all that ****.......

seriously, if this kids parents are footing the bill for a brand new car, or whatever the heck costs 28grand, and sending him to school while paying full tuition, do you HONESTLY think they're going to leave him out to dry on everything else? I can almost guarantee not.

The next tank of gas, or oil change or whatever needs to be done, is surely a phone call away....."Dad, can i have some more money"

No offense to you kid but I grew up around the University of Illinois and worked around it as well, and saw the situation all too many times, kids with wealthy parents simple hand the cash left and right. I cannot relate, my parents didnt give me a red cent for cars, school, insurance, clothes, anything i needed/wanted I payed for. I have managed to do pretty well for myself in the time I have been working.

Whoever said that insurance was gonna be hell, what are you smoking? It is standard insurance practice to add the youngest driver to the oldest vehicle (in his case the old car camrod) which will keep premiums low. I did this for some time whenever I had a CRX and my 300ZX TT. The Z was simply insured under my parents name as a weekend car, and I payed the full premium on the CRX (like 60 a month or less for all kinds of coverage) The insurance company knew what was going on, but they didnt care at all.

If i were you, I'd just get the evo if you heart is really set on it, like preivously said you can find used ones nicely equipped and that still come with warantees for under your target range and its in your best interest to not spend every last dime of the 28k your parents are offereing, they will give you some credit for trying to save them a few bucks. I bought my first motorcycle two years ago (2001 CBR600 F4i) and I had never ridden anything on two wheels with a motor before, that didnt stop me. I never wrecked it and im still breathing today, the choice is yours if you want to spend some time learning the car and just driving it, and working yourself into a comfort zone with the car

Go with a neon, they got all that gas for two years and all that extra stuff. It will get you through college then get what you want. Just my two cents.

Your budjet is $28k...

2006 civic si about $22k. That leaves you $6k to your savings. The civic will be reliable and fun to drive. I use to have a 00 si and dumped so much $$ in it that i now regret. Dont do the same. Save up for the future if you still want to get the EVO. It is an awesome car and well worth the wait.

You wouldn't be able to handle an Evo. Not an insult, but the truth. Get a RSX or a Neon.
