Help? Please!
Help? Please!
Hey guys,
Alright, I know how much everybody hates newbie threads, but they have to be done, on whatever forum...so Im asking you guys to be understanding and help me with some advice/questions. I would like to say, before I begin, that I know very little about cars.
My interest in the Mitsubishi Evolution sprung when some street racers adviced me that it would be the best all around car to "supe up". I currently own an SLK 280 and enjoy the luxury and prestige very much. But, I would like to sell it, purchase a car cheaper, and put the difference in the prices back into the new cheaper car (in order to get more for my money).
Supposedly, the Evo is the best car to do this with, and I have begun to enjoy scrolling around these forums and I really like the little that I know about the car.
I have some generally random questions first though.
1. I thought that "suped up" cars were supposed to be faster or AS fast as non-super cars such a the Mercedes AMGs or the m3, m5, and m6. After reading through some threads on the forum (look at "which four-door car is faster than an evo") I realized that a suped up evo (without putting hundreds of thousands into it) would still be beaten by all the BMW m's and most of the AMGs. What am I missing here?
2. Do you guys think it is worth waiting for the XI to come or would it be good to go ahead and purchase the X when it arrives?
3. If I were to purchase an Evo, and wished to have the interior redone (which I am quite sure I will), how do I go about having that done? What are some price estimates for changing the entire interior (simple stuff, cloth racing seats, same seating in the back but different color, coloring of the front, add a mini-tv kinda thing, change the lighting)? I know loads of guys here have done that so thats why I am asking.
4. This is my most important question. I am not a newbie that wants to be spoonfed information. I would like to research and learn more about what "suping up" exactly entails...but unfortunately I have no idea where to start. Reading the threads in the performance sections is like reading Chinese to me. Could anyone suggest a way for me to go about learning?
Thank you for any help you guys may be able to offer, I really appreciate it.

Just wait for a Skyline. An EVO would never make you happy, the ride if rough, the interior is functional only, and the engine when built becomes peaky (from gutless to scary fast all at once).
I totally agree ^. you dont want an evo. for various reasons, some having to do with your knowledge level, and the car you are coming from, and what you are expecting. like Bman said the evo is only a HARDCORE enthusiasts car. it doesnt even have cruise control. i am trying to be as nice as i can. if you are set on having one, then please for the love of god stop saying "supe up" everytime you do god kills a kitten.
Haha I'm sorry for using that phrase, I put it in quotes because I realized how stupid I sounded when I said it.
My current level of knowledge, to me, is of no concern. I believe that I can increase it and learn. I have done so with many things in my life when I have a deep interest in it, and I do for this. I am not looking to buy the car for another 2-4 years anyway. When I asked about the car itself I meant is it the best car I can buy for my purpose? And why a skyline over it anyway?
What about the other questions?
I appreciate your help. Thank you for being patient with me guys.

1. With some of the minor mods listed in many of these forums, you will be able to beat pretty much any stock BMW M series car.
2. The IX is already out and people are having great successes with tuning them. I would say get a IX now and not wait for a X. But thats IMO.
3. The Evo comes with Recaro racing seats already. The Leather interior is pretty nice, but if you wanted to redo the interior completely, your guess is as good as mine for the cost.
4. Search for "first mods" and try some of those threads. You should find plenty of good information on them.

Thank you for the responses

I think me mentioning the SLK left too much of an impression. If I wanted luxury I would just buy another luxury sports car. I don't want luxury. I spoke of redoing the interior simply because I do not like the coloring, but that is a minor issue.
My purpose and interest in this car is because I want to buy a car for a relatively low price and put more money into it, eventually ending up with about how much I payed for the slk or a bit less, with more performance. Luxury is of no matter. I am primarily interested in acceleration and secondly in handling.

Can you state your acceleration goals numerically in terms of 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc.? Stock M-cars (new M5 excluded) run low 13's? This should not be a problem.
What's the stiffest riding car you've ever had or driven/driven in? Was it acceptable to you?
How about in terms of powerband, driving style, street vs. track?
Important question: can you live without the low-end torque you are accustomed to from your Mercedes? i.e. can you live with torque not really coming in before 3k rpm for all practical purposes?

Evo's are not that cheap there just cheap looking
. It's still a pretty expensive car when it comes to the maintenaince. Plus if the modding bug bites you it might become a money pit
like most of us come to know.

do you often make life decisions based on what "some street racers adviced" you? oh, and i agree with the others that that "supe up" is a painfully stupid phrase.

Yeah, I hardly see how the SLK280 is considered anything other than a cheap, slow roadster for women. Do they actually cost more than 35k? How much can an slk280 really cost? I wouldn't think a brand new Evo would be much different in terms of price, especially when considering the maintenance costs. The small difference in price would allow for some mods I suppose, but I'm not certain.
1) I'm familiar with any BMWs M class cars or AMG cars that are still faster than modded Evos. Maybe the 100k+ 500hp AMGs, but at their weights of 5000lbs or more, it's still not a given. Look at my Evo. $1500 worth of mods and running 12.000. There's VERY FEW cars that can beat that in stock form. Where'd you get this idea that modded Evos are still no faster than other stock sedans? Also, I'm only talking about LIGHT modding on the Evo. Toss in some cams and alky, a lower intercooler pipe, and an FMIC, and we're talking 400whp with tuning. Upgrade the turbo and the sky is the limit.
2) XI????????????// Come on, man, that's like an insult. We don't even KNOW if the X is coming out. If it is, we don't know WHEN. If it is, we don't know WHAT it will be like other than a few pics of a prototype that won't have much in common with the one that is released (if released). We also have no idea what it will be capable of or how much it will cost, because the old, reliable 4g63 from the past 17 years is being replaced by an aluminum engine that may not be able to make tons of power with little money. XI? JEez, no one even has a clue about that!
3) Ridiculous on an Evo. No, there are not "loads" of Evo owners who have done that. It's simply blasphemous. This is a raw race car. Please recognize this.
4) Not sure what you want here. Just search and read.
I think you have no business even looking at an Evo personally...

Just a quick off-topic reminder that this is the newbie forum. It takes humility to ask a question here because you are admitting to one extent or another that you are clueless about something. And so it should take patience and perspective to answer it, and with more than just flippant opinions and an instruction to search.
If you have a problem with this, please PM me. Otherwise let's try to understand what he is looking for.

Wow, I never realized how unfriendly you guys could be.
1. It's not an entry level Mercedes at all. It's the mid-range of the SLK line, and it is not a women's car since last years changes. The SLR nose was put on it and it completely changed the look. Its a little over $55,000 while the MR is around $30,000 out of the factory.
I did not mean to be arrogant or pompous. Its not like driving a Bentley obviously, but after I bought it I realized that people treat you differently when you own these cars (I used to drive a really crappy car before it).
2. No, I don't make life decision based on what people advice. What I do, is research. As I am doing right now.
3. To ez (thank you for your response): Yes I can live without the torque of the car that I drive now. I am not sure about 1/4 mile (I don't live in the states) but I wanted a car that had a 0-60 of a low 4.
4. If you guys reread my original post, I only got the idea that the m's were faster after reading a thread on THIS board that stated so
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ht=faster+door
5. I only got the idea of waiting for the XI after reading some threads about it in the future evos forum.
Finally, I deeply apologize for any insult I offered anyone. I did not mean to, I came here to learn and I tried to be polite. I really respect your love for your cars and did not mean to somehow offend that.

1. The 280 IS the entry level of the SLK... New Car Blue Book Value: $ 42,502.00... Any other choice is a higher, more powerful, more expensive model. I do really like the styling of the new slk's.
2. That's good, but it kind of seems like a little more comprehension would help too.
3. Mildly modded Evos are in the low 4's, if not even lower. Stock = 4.7 or so. As far as living without the "torque" you have now: the slk280 has a whopping 221lb/ft at 5000(!)rpms. Even a stock Evo is significantly more. My 2003 started stock with 276...
4. You are talking about modded Evos originally (or as you say "suped") and the thread and info you refer to is talking about stock v. stock.
5. Again with the comprehension. If someone posted info about the "XI", it was a joke. The IX is out now, the X is next. Roman numerals and all...
You are not insulting anyone, and hopefully nobody is truly insulting you, but the things you are saying are all over the map, and I think people are just trying to understand.

Crap, I just wrote another long response, but then hit backspace on accident, so it erased everything. Basically, I said everything that Steve said, but without the research on the SLK280. I was especially wondering about #4 where the guy said he's willing to live without his current torque when IXs put down about 100 more wheel torque in stock form than the SLK280, and at 1500rpm earlier.
