Hood vent?

Does the louvered panel in the hood vent actually serve any purpose? I see pics of a lot of Evos with it removed. I think it looks kind of cool when you see down in there. The only thing that I could think of is my more water getting down in there, not like it doesn't get in there with it.

I would imagine the vent is there to allow heat to escape easily? I wouldn't remove the vent, that would look great with a big hole in the hood.

i know this might be a long shot but it also might have something to do with airflow and the engine bay. the way the louver is shaped it look like it would allow air that entered the front bumper to escape in a from front bumper entry, and exit thru the vents. also the way it is shaped might help stop air from entering the in through the hood vent and creating drag when it enters the engine bay from the top. this is just my theory and a possible insight to the air flow when looking at the hood vents.

it's a heat vent, if you look straight at a stop you'll see the heat cause waves in the air. it's pretty cool actually. you can take it off but alot of people worry about stuff cracking due to the hot engine parts cooling to fast with the rain. but it's your choice. knowing mitsu, they'll void your warratny if you take it off

That is what I was thinking. I was more curious than anything. I have seen them in polished aluminum. I think it would look pretty sharp to have a carbon fiber hood, and an aluminum louvered thing. Well, it looks good in my imagination, who knows how it would look for real. I think I might try it though.

The way its shaped seems to me like its supposed to induce sort of a venturi affect while driving. Because the vents are angled the air passing over the car would not go down into the vents but instead over them causing a low pressure area above the vent, thus "sucking" the hot air in the engine bay out through the vent. Thats my theory and thats why i keep mine on.

same here it looks awesome and i think it makes the heat ecsape faster but make sure u tighten all the bolts because my grille almost flew off when i was flyin down the backroads the other day. I cant wait to have some nice polished headers under there to gleam in the sun

That same thing happens to me all the time. First time it happened i freaked out and thought i did something to the engine.

The engineers must put the vent in the hood for a purpose. Those guys take everything into consideration. My car sees all the weather, so I keep it on, still get the smoke effect in the car wash though, got to love it.

I would think that simply having the opening would allow for the venturi effect. The louvers might just be there to keep/minimise water entering the engine compartment.

There used to be a thread here; someone said they were going to take engine compartment temp readings "with" and "without" the louvers to see it it makes a difference.

ding ding ding!!! I had some engineering type guys tell me it basically helps pull air through the fmic and the radiator and out the top taking engine heat with it too. This effect can be helped by the little metal covers some people get to cover the gaps by the hood release. I have been told all of this can significan't reduce underhoood temp. Similairly alot of big hp supra guys are going to vented hoods for this reason.

when it rains, not much water enters the engine bay

also , when the air flows goes over the vents it creates a suction to remove the heat.
