break in oil?

ok had the evo for about amonth and 15 days or something like that. its 3000 miles now. my friend told me about break in oil and how i was supposed to watch this video at the dealership. this dealership is in the black list but i barely saw the list today.

anyone know whats up with the break in oil? was i supposed to change it at 1000? but yeah im going to vavoline to get it changed. or should i do it myself but i rather have them do it before i mess it up.
or does vavoline have bad oil?

an oil change is probably 1 of the easiest maintenence job on a vehicle...from what you wrote, I'm guessing you probably never done one...if you got a buddy who knows how, ask him to teach you...other than that, you're probably better off bringing it in...

No offense buddy but if you can't change you own oil because your scared off messing it up then maybe you shouldn't own an evo. What can possibly go wrong on an oil change, it's basic stuff man.

you cant change your own oil doesnt mean you cant own an evo...
I mean alot of rich people dont want to get their hands dirty, so they would rather spend $30-40 to have a shop do it.

Changing oil is not easy for a newbie, alot of people dont even know where's the jacking-point for the EVO. They end up screwing up the fender panel.

crap cause i was starting to jack it. its like almost under the front door right? next to the front wheel? the guy at vavoline had to be shown where the oil opening thingy was too. but good thing the other guy who worked there knew his stuff. he had a talon turbo i think. im not sure. but yeah i mean i dont mind i just really hate to mess it up you know. i barely got into this car thing like maybe less than a year ago. and i had this car for about a month or two.

You cant mess it up if you do the following:

1.) Warm car up.
2.) Remove drain plug, wait 5 minutes.
3.) Install drain plug.
4.) Remove oil filter.
5.) Install new filter.
6.) Add new oil.
7.) make sure its topped off by checking the dipstick.

Note: before installing drain plug or filter, take the extra time to clean the bolt seating surface and around the base of the filter housing. You don't want dirt in the system, and the mechs at the dealer don't take the time to do this.

One more thing, I think there's a metal washer on the drain plug that has to be changed out every oil change also.

The owner's manual shows the jacking points.

Do not overtighten your drain plug. It should stop rotating, then you give it a bit of firm pressure, but not all your strength. If you have a torque wrench, I would guess the value to be around 12-15 pounds.

That's a bit insulting and not called for.. Anybody can own an EVO and it does not matter whether you can change your own oil or not... Oh yeah, it's easy to mess up an oil change. People do it all the time. A loose oil filter, a cross threaded drain plug, or anything else can happen. The car could be damaged while jacking it up, or even it could fall off the jack stands and kill you

Sure, it's basic stuff and a lot of guys can do it, but it's neither easy to do nor foolproof. I never change my oil because I have free maintenance, but I would not do it even if I did not have that benefit. Changing the oil can be a major PITA. I can do it and have done it hundreds of times over the years, but it's more convenient and easier for me to just have it professionally done.

Remember, you should always change your oil by the way it looks/smells. The 3,000-mile rule is a pretty good one, but if you get into the habit of checking your oil frequently (a very good habit) you'll notice that sometimes the oil smells/looks worse than others. This can be due to several things, just pay attention to the oil itself, it's the life-blood of your engine.

Some people recommend breaking in the car with conventional oil, but only for the 1000 or 2000 mile break in period. As far as is concerned, the only approved oil for the EVO is full synthetic 10w30 oil.....
