+1 I'm thinking that the designers just wanted something that looked cool and acidently found that those little sharkfins do something

If it was so effective then how come no other manufacturer uses it? or any other mitsubishi product for that matter.

the sti uses something very similar looks like a second wing on the roof

It is just meant to guide the air over the rear wing. NASCAR uses a similar setup along the length of their roof to keep the air moving front to back in a turn. It really isn't much more than a cosmetic piece unless you are driving at rather high speeds.

Well, they use it on jets, so it must be useful to some degree.

My wife knew exactly what they were before I told her, because she's a licensed pilot. I started to say "Check out these Vorte...." She cut me off, finished the sentence, then proceeded to explain to me how they work. That was badass...

In theory, the vortex generators add energy to the flow of air helping it to make the turn down the backlight better and hence getting more useful air to the wing.
