tranny noise normal? <--(new ix owner)

Hey Everyone,

I picked up my IX last night (got rid of my 06 STI) and am enjoying the car very much. One main concern I have is that there seems to be excessive drivetrain noise (mainly the gears and maybe tc?). The car had 19 miles on it when I picked it up, but I doubt much damage could have been done. I've owned 2 wrx's and an STI in the past and never had this much gear noise in 1st-3rd.

Is this just normal? Almost sounds like straight cut gears (maybe not as loud).

I also get the crunching in shifts from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, but I'm hoping that changing the gear oil and putting more miles on the car will alleviate that issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

James

Pretty normal in my opinion, but if you just can't sleep at night, take it to the dealership and have them check it out (although I am sure it is fine). The EVO is just a noisy little car in my opinion, lots of clunks and the stuff, you get use to it and learn to reckonize the un-normal noises.

About the "clunks"...typical transmission/drivetrain noises include an occasional hard metallic "clunk" in some shifting situations, in lower gears at lower speeds??

Hmmm, my IX is considerably quieter than my XIII. I usually only notice ANY drivetrain noise in the IX when decelerating from high speeds, or when going down hill but again these noises are barely noticeable for me. Maybe im just immune since coming going through 3 transfer cases and 2 transmissions. I swear, I had to turn the radio on just to block out the transfer case whine before!

I guess its normal, I got the clunk noise too when I first got the car, but I don't think I noticed it after 1k miles, but now I got a noice coming fromt he clutch while driving or idling.
I guess our cars just like to make wierd noise.

Same thing here. The tranny and drivetrain like to make some noise but its not a big deal. And as far as ur clunking goes ive found mine has been doing it less now that im gettin some miles on it.

BTW: The tranny really does smoothen out and get less notchy as you add more miles on the car. I suppose it's probally because they overbuilt the tranny a bit and you have to wear it in... I'm at 5500 miles now and it's actually getting pretty smooth.

the MR tranny seems to make less noise/no clunks. I've also heard that after 10Kmiles and your first fluid change, it will become much quieter.
