Evo vs. Evo MR times

Hi
New to this forum. Test drove a new Evo today, but want a MR (I think)
Had a question for you Evo-mantics
Is the MR a little quicker to 60mpg and in the 1/4 mile vs a regular Evo (not RS) ?
Trying to decide if the MR if worth it. Yes I know all the differences between the 2
but dont know if the MR is quicker with the 6sp and slightly different gear ratios.

I must say, being a older guy, I was very impressed with the steering, handling,
turbo thrust. This car is a real kick to drive. Of course if I buy one my neighbors
will ask if I bought it for one of my teenage sons. My wife wants me to buy a BMW
or Lexus, but I think the Evo is more my type being a engineer (something to tweak
and play with)

Thanks in advance
Regards

it's faster because the gear ratio. if you going to do stuff to it, get a none MR and put the exta cash towards it. the MR is just overated if you ask me, nothing special to be overhype about.

if tou are a lil older as you say get the mr because you will hate the regualr evo's ride compared to a mr's which is alot better. and get the evo so your sons can also have fun with it..

Oldguy,

The MR use to see an advantage on the Evo 8 more than the Evo 9, the reason behind that was the closer gear ratio on the Evo 8 MR was closer than the 5 speed on the regular Evo 8.

Now with the Evo 9 they came out with a solution, they shortened the gear ratios on the Evo 9 5 speed to almost match the 6 speed Evo 9 MR short ratios.

I always heard that in stock trim the MR does naturally better on the 1/8 mile due to the advantage of short gears to be later out run by the more efficient 5 speed fitted Evos.

As far is the price difference, the MR is always nice to have however the RS and regular Evos still offer a nice performance in a decent budget.

Old Guy, any EVO is a good car and you'll be happy with it . However, I have owned a '03 EVO VIII and now I have an '05 EVO MR. I have to say that the MR is a better car for me. The 6 speed tranny ratios are better for my taste. The MR suspension is *really* nice, the aluminum roof makes the car feel less top heavy, plus the "MR" name is a nice touch. There is no way to make an EVO VIII into an EVO MR without spending megabucks, much more than the difference between the other models and the MR. Now, the IX is even better. Much more powerful and rides beautifully. I guess the GSR or RS IX's are also very nice. You cannot go wrong with any EVO, but IMHO, the MR is superior... Try them both before making your decision though.. You might find you are happy with the RS or GSR and save yourself some cash

it feels lighter due to the aluminum roof lower the center gravity, but the MR is acutally heavier than the regular evo.

Vboy,

You are right but then we must add that the regular EVO with the SSL package is the heaviest of all:

LANCER
EVOLUTION RS LANCER 3219lbs
EVOLUTION IX LANCER 3263lbs [3338]lbs(with SSL packgage)
EVOLUTION MR 3285lbs

IMO if your going to really do mods to your car the MR isnt worth it cause you will probably get rid off all the parts that make the MR better than the IX anyways. I have an 8 and enjoy the 5 speed, less shifting.

Negligible difference in straightline performance with the MR.

vboy, it does not matter what the numbers or specs say. The bottom line is that the MR feels much nicer to drive than my '03 EVO VIII and it's faster too. It's faster in the twisties and makes nearly as much power (249whp vs 259whp) in stock form than my EVO VIII made with many thousands of dollars in mods which included AEM EMS and custom tune by Boost Solutions.
You appear to be a MR hater and that's OK, but please quite twisting words and numbers around to make a point that nobody cares about.
