Starting to mod what should I do?

Ok I just recently purchased a JIC catback exhaust and a K&N drop in air filter. I haven't received these parts so none of them are on the car yet. Anyways I was wondering if it was a bad idea to get the drop in filter. I really miss my 95 tsi because I could hear the turbo and bov so easily and I was putting down more than 300hp. I'm wondering if I should have gotten an open filter instead because they pretty much cost the same. I'm not lookiing for some ricey sounding car but I want to hear something because I can't hear anything on my stock evo. My next step would be a base flash then downpipe and possibly testpipe but that won't be for a couple months. I hear the open filters bring in a lot of hot air and on my tsi i had an aluminum shield that went around my open air filter. Are the power differences even noticable between the two styles? Is it possible to even hear a slight bov sound with a k&n panel filter or would I need an open element?

If you care that much about the sucking noise of the turbo and subsequent purge noise of the BOV, then get an intake and get tuned for it. It won't help much, and it will suck in hot air, whether you get a shield or not. A shield would be better than no shield, though, so fab one up if you'd like.

Btw, we've had oh...300,001 threads talking about this, just fyi.

300whp is easy to get and more with some choice pieces. The evo handles better than the 2nd gen.

with the intake .. u're gonna hear alot of your bov ... but u're gonna lose some HP because of the untuned intake .... and avoid K&N typhoon intake ...
other intakes are good to go ...

(Warrtalon i don't want to be an *** but i'm sure you'll take it the wrong way anyways. Your usually the first to post all the time and I was going to put a disclaimer on my post basically telling you I don't want the Bushur/ Warrtalon package or whatever you call it. I can honeslty care less about you opinion because your too narrow minded and always think what you want to think. So you don't have to post on this thread if you don't want to. )

Well going back to topic most of the high hp evo's that I see use an open filter, so what is the purpose if the panel filter is so much better? There has to be some reason out there. I am looking for much more power than I have now but I do want something that sounds nice too. If I wanted a bov sound i'd vent to the atmosphere and lose all sorts of power but that's not my plan. The evo is one of the quietest turbo cars out there and i'm looking for a bit more power and bit more grunt. I figured the panel filter would be a good choice for now because I don't have a flash yet but i really don't know. Is a base flash even a good choice for the future or is a custom flash much more feasible?

Well, you're not a high HP Evo, so your situation doesn't apply. High HP Evos eventually overrun the resolution of the stock MAF, so they get rid of it. When they do this, then all they have is a big intake going straight to the turbo. Also, the ones who still use the stock MAF with high power get an intake, because the stock airbox becomes somewhat of a restriction. We usually say it's around 400whp where you want to go ahead and get a cone filter, but if you look at Smogrunner, I think he's making 584whp on the stock intake. For now, you have very little power, so an intake is just for making noise. If that's what you want to do, then do it. It's such a minimalistic and unimportant decision that it doesn't warrant its own thread. A base flash is great, and a custom flash is better. Get whatever you want, whenever you want it.

Warrtalon to tell you the truth that was the best and most humane way you've ever spoken to me. You really answered my question without sounding like a complete ***----. So thank you!

We now I feel much better about my choice and I feel a drop-in would be the best choice for my hp level. What is really involved in a base flash and how will it help me? I'm pretty much going to do just a full exhaust w/ test pipe, air filter, jdm mr bov, and a manaul boost controller set to 22psi. Should I get a flash at all or just leave it alone?

if you do those mods without a flash you will never realize the power in those mods.modding without a tune is a waste of time and money and your car will never run the way it should. In fact it will probabely run worse,(wrong and dangerous a/f ratios,at 22 psi you,ll hit fuel cut etc.) HAVE IT TUNED!
