Winter + Evo=?

ok Soo how do evos do in snow??, Should i pick up a Crap car and drive it around in the winter, or should i get new rims with some snow tires on them. Who makes good snow tires, and cheap 17s (lol never thought i would say that). I crash alot in snow. How good are evo in snow, what about he Bumber does it collect alot of snow in it, do I have to worry about damaging any part of the car in the snow.

Get some winter rims with Bridgestone Blizzaks from the Tire Rack and you will be just fine.

First off, let me put in the obligatory advice:

Do a search. This has been done to death.

With that out of the way, opinions are all over the place. Too many variables, I guess, like what snow tires you use, where you drive, do they use salt, lowered, etc., etc., etc. Don't even think about driving it on the stock tires in snow. You'll crash - guaranteed.

I'm underwhelmed by my Evo's performance in the snow with dedicated snow tires...

lol i drove my evo all last winter on the stock tires, lets just say that it doesnt perform that well. i lost it a few times and went into 500 foot uncontrolled slides, fun for snow donuts though. if you are planning on driving in the snow get some blizzaks plus some cheap wheels are rota's also if you go to your local wheel shop im sure they have some sets of used 17's laying around where you can buy the set of 4 for like $200-$400 dollars another option is to search the evom for sale section i see a lot of nice wheels for sale

I had a manual 2 door 96 blazer last year, was great but i had to sell it for Mods on the MR2. LOL It was kick a$$ though, But i figure 4wd would do better than an MR drivetrain.

Last year I drove down from Big Bear in late October. The day I drove down I happened to hit one of the first snows in the winter, and it came down pretty thick. I still had the original Advans on the car, but even with them the car tracked very well in the snow. Of course I'm used to driving in the snow with bald tires and RWD, so have the AWD was a big improvement. With a good set of snow tires you should have no trouble driving the evo in the winter.

If you can afford it, a beater would be the best. If not, snow tires of some sort will work well, stock tires in the snow don't go together....very scary to drive with them, stopping and turning just doesn't work.

See, I told you opinions would be all over the place.

Just remember, AWD doesn't do squat for you when stopping. The A046s sucked in the snow. 2 inches of snow on city streets, and I had to do about 15-20mph in order to be able to turn. Going straight was easy, but turning just didn't happen even at moderately slow speeds. The car went in the garage until the Tire Rack shipped my winter wheels and tires - Blizzak LM-22s. The snows are very driveable, but they don't magically transform the car into a HUMV, either.

The dealer warned not to use the stock Advans in temps below 40 degrees because they can chunk. I believe him now, because on my newest set of Advan Neovas, which are 180 UTGQ, Yokohama puts a sticker on them warning not to drive on them or even store them below 14 degrees F, because the compound can be damaged.

I've seen quite a few posts complaining about poor undersealing on the Evos, with the bumper supports beginning to rust right off the lot. With that said, I drive my Evo year-round in NYS, where the "S" stands for "Salt". I don't look under the bumper cover - it's easier that way.

yeah its really good on the snow. I really like the Dunlop M3 Wintersports. Got the best rating on tirerack. You have soo much traction you feel liek you aren't even in the snow. i'd defintiely go with a set of those.
