yeah, the dealerships are kinda finicky when it comes to stuff. if you get the wrong one, and they can link the code to any modification, no matter how small, they black list you and your warranty is done.

ask them. my guess is that you knocked something loose. Like perhaps the mass airflow sensor plug or something. That's the only thing that's near the airbox that I can think of. Also, if you didn't disconnect the battery after you put in the filter, you could've set yourself up for the code. However, I'd pull the code before I disconnected the battery, so at least you knew what it was.

or maybe you can find somebody on here in your area and see if they have one. I know I have one, but I'm kinda far from NV.

when you rent the code reader, it should come with a manual that has all the codes and their meanings. if not, write the code down and ask on here.

yeah. you go into autozone and ask them for a code reader. you pay a deposit and receive the code reader in a box with a manual. it looks like an old school handheld game with a cord attached to it.
so you connect the cord to your car(below the steering wheel around where your right knee would be) and scan your car. when the code comes out, look in the manual, which has a description of the problem. and if you're still confused, post the code in this thread and someone can help you out.
