I have owned both.

05 STi

06 Evo IX MR

My honest opinion is Evo all the way. The only thing that I really liked about the STi over the Evo was that Mitsubishi is a joke in my area. I would NEVER take my car to a local dealer for warranty work or any work for that matter. Simple bolts ons and you can really get a lot out of an Evo. Get a good tune and you maintain reliability as well. The Bilstein suspension on the MR makes a huge difference as far as daily driving. Even if you don't get an MR I'd recommend finding used bilstein shocks for sale.

You can't go wrong either way but the Evo definitely takes the STi in terms of looks, bang for the buck, and heritage.

Best of luck on your decision I hope this helps.

SO its gonna be pretty easy to make 500whp on pump gas right? What about the clutch and tranny will it hold it?

clutch = evo's weakest link

Depending on your driving style your stock clutch might not last long with no mods. They don't hold a lot of power very well. Especially not in the 500 range. The tranny is capable as long as you modulate the clutch and don't shock the transfer case everytime you take it to the drag strip. Many people choose to upgrade the tranny internals at that point. But it is not really necessary. Plan on a new clutch with that much power though. That's a guarantee.

Also Im thinking about going a gt40r turbo anyone have any hp numbers on a stock motor with cams, maybe intake manifold .
You don't need valves and springs, but you will if you want to rev over 8k, which to my recolection nobody does on the stock block. I'm not going to answer your cam question because it is personal preference, but you definatly want to go with 280's if you are going with a gt40r; though it's about time i tell you to search .

No, it is going to be very hard to make 500 whp on pump gas. If you use meth injection or race gas your numbers are going to be way more attainable; 500 whp on pump on the stock block is a long shot. The tranny will be fine and you will need a new clutch pretty much after 300+ whp.

Now that you have your basic questions answered, again i would like to advise you to search. You can find the answer to every question you might have by searching; and it's the best way to discover for yourself what the "true" answers are.

GL.
