do i need an mbc to turn boost down?

now that winter is (almost) here and the nice cold air is helping things out, i've noticed my car boosting a little higher. i hit 21-22psi max with a slight taper. my mods are 3"tbe w/ hfc and a dynoflash tune. my plan was to get an mbc along with a few other things in the spring. should i speed this up and get an mbc now instead to turn boost down to a more safe 20psi, or will i be fine?

yes get an MBC.. i've also noticed that my boost has been spiking more in colder weather.. it was originally set at 21psi, and it has spiked to 23, so i cranked it down a tad, now it wont go over 21psi, fine n dandy

you guys seem surprised this is happening.....is your tune custom dyno/road or just mail in? you should keep your boost at whatever the tune was done at. i have the hallman in-car, very easy / convenient to change the boost.

If you currently do not have mbc your ECU is controlling boost. It will adjust itself as needed. It is still a good idea to get the boost controller, but I would not speed up the process JUST because its getting cold out.

Well, you are the most appropiate person to answer your own question. If the car is peaking higher and runs better without detonation then live it alone, it wouldn't hurt.

If your car is peaking very high and you are hitting fuel cut and what not then sure get a MBC and turn the boost down. I am surprised that you haven't installed a MBC yet, once you get a tune there is no justification on why not having a MBC.

it didn't surprise me, this is the third turbo car i've owned and it happened to every one of them, but since i don't have an mbc i've never really paid attention to what is a "safe" boost level. the flash is a mail in

my only concern is that i've never heard detonation and have no monitoring devices to detect it or the air/fuel ratio, so may not realize it's happening until too late and don't want it to cost me an engine/headgasket/other thing that is either expensive or a pain to replace.

the peak isn't that high and no fuel cut, but since it's still not that cold as winter approaches it will get worse. my justification for not having an mbc is i plan to upgrade in my own "stages," both to prevent me from getting bored with the car and to help the wallet. stage 1 was just exhaust, reflash, and buying the car. stage 2 has mbc, fuel pump, wheels and tires, and a few other small things, and will happen in the spring. then stage 3 the following spring, etc... (i was bored at work one day and laid out a plan for 5 years )

i actually do have an old joe p mbc from my laser in my room, i just feel like the evo should get something that doesn't look like i bought it at home depot

thats funny you quoted me and him lol anyway, i wasnt referring to you. when you say "and the nice cold air is helping things out" i assumed you knew why it was happening. well, mine was tuned on a dyno and i know my numbers are safe at a certain psi (~23) so i keep it there. you may want to check with whoever did your flash and ask what a safe level is for their tune. since you never have, and dont have the tools to log, i would put one in and keep the boost down until you can get it logged. after modding, i had my boost down to 16-18lbs just to be safe.... and i'd def recommend the Hallman in cockpit. 0 hassel to change the boost when you need to due to the weather +1 to you for doing your own "stages"....but id go ahead and do the fuel pump whenever you have a few extra $$. cheap and easy

sorry this was ramble!! i kept lookin up and seein something i missed to reply to!
