Just bought a 2006 MR!

Hey guys...rumor is this is the place to go to congregate with other EVO owners! My name is Van...and I don't know squat about this car.

Any beginning tips to this car would be appreciated. I already found out that the brake squeal is something of a common issue (did a search already). I'm hoping that will subside as time passes.

I've heard as well from local people here that the clutch on this car goes out quickly...but I really think that's more of a issue with how the car is driven and shifted.

Anyone have any suggestions on an aftermarket alarm w/ turbo timer and perhaps a good sound system setup? I hear that Dei is good. Also wanted to know if any of you have the Tien's on your cars? I was thinking of doing the EDFC add on so I can adjust the comfort level when I have passengers in the back.

Oh yea...one more thing...HOW DOES THE FRIGGIN BACK SEAT FOLD DOWN?

Outside of a KN filter, I won't be doing any modding on the engine or drivetrain. The first things I want to do really is get those little air dams for the front bumper and an alarm/turbo timer/stereo upgrade. Later I may look into the Tien ss or flex coilovers w/ edfc and I may paint it or apply some tasteful graphics to spice up the plain jane white that it is right now.

Does look better now that it's tinted though.

Well...instead of flaming I'll just list it.
Don't get a K&N, you will lose power & your car will run like crap, unless you have a tune & other supporting mods.
Don't get a turbo timer, you do not need it.
Your MR already has brake air guides, look under the car.

Well I appreciate the lack of flaming thus far and please know that your opinion is appreciated, do you have any data supporting that the KN will make the car lose power or run like crap with the vehicle in stock form? I prefer to use and have always used re-usable filters in my previous cars and motorcycles...with no loss in power or evidence of running like crap--which is why I pose the question to you.

The turbo timer from what I understand is to prolong the life of the turbo by allowing the car to idle for a period of time so that the turbine can cool down. Seeing as how I don't have time to sit in my car at every stop to idle...I thought it would be a wise addition. But out of curiosity...why do you feel that it is not?

Oh...and I wasn't talking about brake air guides to cool down the brakes, I was talking about the front air dam extension and/or corner air damns to assist with downforce at the front of the car.

IIRC, A K&N drop in filter is just fine. I believe you'll need a tune if you get an entire new intake system.

The MR comes with a Zero lift kit, you don't need to buy anything.

I'm partial to Compustar alarms myself, but other seem to like Viper alarms. Both have a turbo timer option.

The only good reason for a turbo timer is if your hammering your car and then immediately shut it down. For daily driving its not really necessary, driving normal/easy through your neighborhood is plenty good in most cases. If your a track nutt and don't want to have to let it idle before shutdown, get the timer.

I wouldn't screw with the suspension unless you're a diehard track junkie. That said people seem to like Tein's. There is another brand people like just don't remember its name.

S W I F T springs?

They have great reviews from Evom.net members and they work well with stock MR Bilstiens.

As stated unless you're a track junkie the MR suspension setup is MORE than substantial. Even for track days you'll find it to be plenty predictable. Plus the ride isn't bad.

Thanks for the added information guys. Performance wise--I like the suspension! I just want some adjustability so that when I have family in the car I'll be able to adjust the comfort level to make things a little softer on the tush'. That's the only reason I was looking at tien--for the EDFC capability. Apparently there's 32 levels and I can save 3 settings. So I'd probably do a comfort soft version for passengers, a daily driving setup (close to whats on it now), and then a stiffer setup possibly for the auto-x'ing.

But...that's not going to be anytime soon. For now it's just going to be the stereo and alarm. Later on I'll see what the cash flow is looking like and I'll do a couple more things. But thank you all so far for the good information. It's nice to know that I really don't have to spend too much at all on making this car work for all occasions.

It does more to just drive normally for mile or two instead of sitting stationary with the timer for 5 mins.
That is the reason why timer is not necessary.
Just look at any type of road racing or even track days.
You usually have one warm up lap in the beginning and one cool down lap at the end.
