Why does the car require so much oil?

I am just curious. My old SRT and my EVO both take 5 quarts while all my nissans which were six cyliders only took 4 quarts. Why is this, my 2 nissans were also turbo cars (88 300ZX Turbo and 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo). I am just curious as to why a 4 cylinder requires so much oil. Stupid question I know, I just wanted to know.

Thanks for the help.

I thought the evo took 5 and a half? Anyway I was wondering the same thing. Does it have something to do with the boost maybe? Maybe the oil has to circulate faster and more oil makes it easier to filter before it gets back to the engine. Just a guess.

how about a fifties era alfa 1300 cc motor, took 7.5 quarts of oil.
the hot rod version had a neat labyrinth and gated oil pickup.

4.5 quarts of oil is not to much, I imagine it would hold more if there was room for a bigger oil pan.

yea 5 quarts is not alot at all... if i could put more i would, the more oil the better. i also have a 944 turbo wich holds like 8 and thats a 4cyl. it has nothing to due with cyls, or displacement. it has to due with engineers. porsche has a strong air cooled background hence the feeling for lots of oil for cooling purposes.

Nice car.

I had a 924 that I ripped out the puny engine and shoved a Buick V8. Oh to fit it I had to remove the brake master cylinder Talk about interesting stops.

Thanks for the responses.

Burchdc it's 5.5 quarts. Maybe I am reading the manual wrong, but I am pretty sure it's 5 quarts. I just hit 500 miles and I am going to change my oil tomorrow (**** I know, but I want to do it. 500 miles, 1,000 miles and then 2,500 miles after that). I was going to buy a genuine mitsubishi oil filter and 5 quarts of Mobile 1 10W30.

Just to double check it is 5 quarts and not 5.5 correct?

I dunno, my old 1.8 VTEC Acura Integra GSR only used 4 quarts of oil I think, but becuase of the 2.0L displacement of the EVO it needs an extra quart?

Anyhow, my car does not burn oil at all thank God, and knock on wood

Dont forget we have an oil cooler and the lines that are associated with it so that accounts for part of it.
