need info big question
i just got my evo and first off i need to know when the car is totally broken in because i looked at the manual and it said 600 miles and secondly earlier tonight i had about 250-300 miles on the car and my friends took it and drove it kindof hard. they told me they were reving it to 5k and shifting as fast as they can and it made a clonking noise and i dont know if this is a problem, so any info would be good.
thanks
thanks
bramd new i would drive reasonably for about 1000 miles. they probably didnt sink the clutch properly or popped the clutch too hard. if its used go check it out. make sure nothing is hitting anything else. like exhaust and stuff. but as for break in just dont drive it like you stole it yet.
Shifting as fast as you can from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 often causes a loud CLUNK from the rear differential... this is normal, but it is not necessarily the best thing for the drivetrain.
You're putting a lot of stress on the rear diff when you shift that fast, and while it may be able to take it for a while, you'll eventually break something.
Do yourself a favor and keep it under 4500rpm until you hit 600 miles, then keep it under 5500rpm until you hit 1000 miles.
But by FAR the most IMPORTANT thing when breaking in a turbocharged car is to 1] Let it warm up before driving (at least until temp needle is above minimum) and 2] Do NOT hit boost or exceed 3500rpm until the temp gauge is at norm. If you hit boost and the turbo is still cold, you will regret it.
Now, conversely, you should ALWAYS let the car idle for at least 1 full minute before you shut it off... when I broke mine in, I would wait a full 2 minutes after every trip, even short ones, to make sure the oil in the turbo reached a safe temp.

I'd heard about the idling before shut off, but didn't know the reason for it. Good info to know...

again, how about not letting your friends drive your car ? I have several friends, a lot with evo's and i am still reluctant to let anyone drive it, not that i dont trust them, but murphy's law is always in affect. Obviously your friends dont know what the hell they are doing beating an EVO that is still being broken in, if you didnt say anything to them before hand, it is partly your fault but even still, you shouldnt beat up on someone elses car nomatter what it is
First of all, I have never and will never let anyone besides myself drive my $33,000 car. Second of all, what kind of friends are they if they go out and abuse your brand new car? They probably already did everything from a 5,000 RPM launch to a full 1st to 3rd run, so your car is probably toast already. Sound like a bunch of idiots to me...
Easy driving is good for breaking in a new car, and knuckle sandwiches are good for breaking people's faces. I would try the latter for your "friends".
I assume they stole your keys, because I doubt you would just let them take your brand new car out without you at least being in the passenger's seat.
