First Mod that won't void the Warranty

Here's an idea - why mod to begin with? Can you outdrive the car in its stock form? If you do decide to mod, you may want to focus on something that'll improve a quality relevant to your driving style, instead of just modding for the sake of modding.
I could be wrong, but you should be able to get a way with a drop-in filter, turbo back exhaust and a boost management system. NO FLASH!!! You should be able to get another 40+ whp with those. PLUS.. if you wanted to be super safe (but I don't think it's neccessary with these mods) they're relatively easy to undo and the chip won't be able to report it. You could theoretically undo the changes before you take it in for any kind of repair.
My dealer was telling me one time about an occasion where a gentleman had a bunch of mods on his car and one day got a CEL. He went to the dealership to get it fixed--swearing that it was something with the car and having nothing to do w/ the mods. The dealership kept telling him it was because he put all this stuff on the car BUT didn't get the ECU flashed to accomodate it.
So sometimes the dealerships understand the modding process. Mine is fine with bolt on's and such. As long as I don't get into the engine block. They are okay with my intake, TBE, and flash...which is odd to me. I haven't told them about the greddy profec b spec II yet but I'm sure they'll see it soon enough. What they do is have a sitdown with the service manager to discuss the mods and the impending complications in the event any problems occur in the future.
The dealerships...they don't simply VOID your warranty (which at the dealership level cannot be done anyway) but they CAN refuse to have it paid under warranty if they find the cause to be one of the mods. The thing to do is have them prove it, and state their cause in writing. Then you tell them you're going to take that paperwork to your lawyer along with a copy of the MM act to have them rip a new one out of it and have the work done anyway, along with a lawsuit for your time and trouble, and incurred expenses for having to go that route.
At this point they usually fold (unless your mod is a source of the problem and their claim is legit). Good luck!

Everyone wants to have the fastest straight line vehicle out there. I prefer to hone my driving skills and have the most balanced vehicle I can. Great post!
Well, I think the best thing to do is to go ahead and ask your dealer. That's your best bet.
I think it would be completely retarded if you had an intake done, your transmission breaks and your dealer is refusing to fix it because of your intake.
You'll most likely get away with simple bolt-ons, unless you have an **** dealership.
