Is the Lancer Evo a supercar?
People never stop to think of the running costs of supercars.
A good friend of mine has the following:
Lamborghini Diablo 6.0
Ferrari 355
Evo FQ-340
(and a few other regular cars)
Diablo's front struts just blew (because he actually tried to use the front height adjustment) that in turn burnt out the PWR steering pump. The front struts are $2500 each. The PWR steering pump is $5k and is an engine out replacement.
The 355 is due a cam belt service and that too is an engine out job. He fully expects to put in a new clutch during the service.
In one month to repair both cars he will spend about $25k. I asked how much longer he is going to have 2 supercars.. he replied thats the question isn't it?
BTW the Diablo and 355 are supercars, a Evo is most certainly not a supercar.
Heh, the term "Supercar" is subjective and depends on who you talk to. Some people say it has to have two seats, but some Ferrari's have rear seats and they are still Supercars (and on the other hand, some cars only have one seat). Who sets the price? $50K? $150K? The interior? Give me a break - the Ferrari 360 Challenge has bare metal everywhere - worse than the Evo - but still a Supercar.
There is no real definition of a Supercar, but for what it's worth, I say PERFORMANCE is the true definition of a Supercar. It simply has to have mindblowing performance AND handling. Simply being fast in a straight line is pointless (but some people would disagree, no doubt).
The Evo meets my definition, so I consider it a Supercar - and many people agree with me (especially in the UK - and since I'm from the UK I'm in good company)!
Thanks!

id have to say YES!!, super car in My mind consists of lancer evolution, toyota supra, mazda rx-7, nissan 300 zx TT, skyline and silvia, STI, and some may even say 350z and g35. these cars can out perform quit alot. now i see people are saying ferraris, lambos, and so forth are supercars? i myself think of these cars as luxorious exotic considering you only see the rich with these sure they make great numbers stock, but who ever heard of having one of these things up to a more then 500 hp, all the other cars i mentioned are able to make up to at least 1000 hp, depending on what mods are done and what not. true i wouldnt mind driving a modena or lambo but in all reality they are just status icon vehicles.
I read on the internet that the Evo was a supercar.
Anyway, why would you want to consider the Evo a supercar? That's probably going to end up being the fanboy quote of 2007.
I think the Evo is a great car. It's economic, practical, and when compared to other cars in it's "class" it's fast. So, what other cars could be included in it's class? The Toyota Camry, Dodge Intreped, Nissan Maxima, etc. They all are economy-based sedans with price tags of less than $40,000.
Another class you could put the Evo in would be the JAPANESE supercar class. Here you might find the STi, Skyline, Supra, GTO, etc. Since these cars are all built around the way the JDM works, the Evo would be in this category. Much more so than a Civic or something of the like.
Now, compare the Evo to a GT2, an F50, or something else in that ballpark, and the Evo doesn't even come close.. I mean, look at the price tags. Look at the maintenance schedules and costs. Look at the sheer exotic-ness. How easy can your average Joe with a $50,000-a-year job justify buying a $35,000 car that gets 20MPG and has a very standard maintenance routine? How easy can the same guy justify getting a $400,000 exotic car that will cost him over $5,000 just to get a tune-up.
The term "supercar" should be reserved for those who TRUELY pay to play. These people live a lifestyle that is a lot more lavish.
Also, I'd rather be able to say "My $35,000 sedan can beat up on supercars." rather than have to say "Your $15,000 CRX just dusted my supercar."
