A wideband is a gauge that measures your air/fuel ratio, just like a boost gage measures your boost and EGT measures your exhaust temp. Is it really needed? I think that depends on what your goal is for your car. Stock cars don't come with it, so that obviously means you don't have to have it if your near stock.

It's a gauge, it just tells you what is going on with your car.

A wideband measures air to fuel ratio at the exhaust. It can tell you if your running lean or rich. It is a tuning tool and most people log their wideband device along with the other functions of the car to adjust optimal or safe air to fuel ratio. A narrow band o2 device doesnt tell you how far off the AFR is as it has a more limited bandwidth.. basically it has lean stoich (good) and rich where a wideband gives you a number 16:1 (lean) 14.7(stoich) 9:1 (rich). When you are tuning fuel you can tell how much to adjust the fuel targets to get desired actual AFR. If your not planning on tuning your car or getting your car tuned you probably dont need this. If you are tuning your car or using a flash from someone else then it's almost a necessary mod to know how your tune is working on your car. Overly lean cars have the potential to cause serious engine damage. Lean conditions cause heat and knock and make your car more sensitive to timing advance, overly rich conditions can also cause knock and waste fuel and reduce performance.

Also, if your considering purchase of a wideband device make sure it works with the logging software that you are going to use. I have the AEM Uego and use Evoscan to log. Evoscan currently supports the following widebands.

Innovative LM1
Innovative LC1
AEM Uego
Zietronix

Mitsulogger is free logging application for the Evo
I think it supports Innovative products currently but the next version may support the Uego.
