Evo 5spd or 6spd?? Which is better?

Okay, well today I will be heading out with a buddy of mine to get him an Evo. He is looking for a used MR 6 speed but is having a hard time finding the color he wants. Which Evo would be the best one to get? Looks like there is an Evo 5 speed I guess? I dont know, I actually own a Z33 so Im not sure about Evo's. I know they are badass and I like them. ANy help, feedback, input would be greatly appreciated. Oh ya and specifically looking for 05-06. Thanks in advance.

the transmissions are different in 05 and 06
05 5 speed has larger spacing between gears
05 mr 6 speed has closer ratios but the additional top gear for highway driving is nice
06 5 speed and 6 speed supposedly have the same gearing except the additional gear. as i heard in the past, they are the same as the 05 mr 6 speed.

the 03-05 5 speed is supposed to be better for drag racing. one less shift?

the 06 cars have a different turbo and mivec. they respond extremely well to mods and are faster out of the box than the 05s.

this topic has been discussed and more information is covered...try searching for it.

But it all depends on what you want out of the car. drag, track, keep it stock. The MR suspension

If I was to start all over again, I would unmistaknely choose a 5 speed regular Evo GSR or RS and keep that price difference to yourself.

The RS and the GSR model will give you 95% of the thrill of a MR with a $7k and 4 K savings.

Ok I see, so the biggest difference is the Bilstein suspension on the 06' MR, and the 5 to 6spd transmission. He isnt going to be doing any street racing or anything like that. We might take the cars out to the track once in a while. Wont be 100% stock. Few mods, intake, exhaust and tune. If you had to choose between a 5spd and 6 spd, which would be your 1st choice...and why? Thanksfor the feedback guys.

I would go with the gsr. No point of paying 5 g's for a mr. Think about it. That 5 g's can propel you into the 11s.

6speeds are for freeway cruisers

95% of the thrill makes no sense when they are the exact same motors and cars.
The only major differences are the wheels, aluminum roof, gearbox, and shocks. Which make none or extremely slight differences in performance to an average driver.

Don't Get The 6th Spd!

5 speed 100%
If he wants the suspension he can buy a set of good coilovers with the money he'll save for not buying the MR, plus drop it, and set it to the way he wants it, and he can get a pair of HID's while he's at it. Get a 06 IX! Plus on the drag strip you'll only use 4 gears and make good times, if you throw 5 your time won't be as good because of the extra shift... IMO of course!

the 6 speed trany is more for top speed action...even though you only get a few more mph on top of the 5speeds max speed.

Hmm...ok. Makes sense. I figured the extra 6th gear was mainly a freeway thing. You guys are right, the extra savings can be put towards some nice mods. Alright well I appreciate the help guys. Hopefully we'll have some pics up later tonight or maybe tomorrow of the new Evo.

i got mine from LB mitsu. a lot of my friends got theirs from SC mitsu and got good deals

it's worth the drive IMO...well, it depends how much the dealers out there are quoting you

The 6 speed is not for "highway Cruising", im not sure what you mean by that anyways. The 6 speed is just another gear to play with more or less, it doesn't have a over-drive gear like you may think. I've owned both, i love the 6 speed but at the power level im at i have to shift well into 5th at the drag strip which is a SLLLOOOW shift if you ask any MR owner. Unless your going for a 450+whp drag car i would get the 6 speed.

MR FTW
