undecided!!!!!!!!
hey whats up guys. newbie here, i have to be honest and say that i dont own a evo. but my girl and i just recently had a baby boy and i need a 4 door ride. my question is that i currently own a infiniti g35 coupe. i love my ride but i have always had an interest in the evo. my question is, are there any ex-g owners here, and if so is there a big difference between the g35 and the evo? im just worried that i wont have the same feeling when it comes to power. ive never owned a turbo-charged vehicle, just n/a vehicles. ive already gone to the dealers to price the evo but no one really helps me out or knows really anything about the evo. any help would be good. major questions are whats the difference between the mr and th IX? is it worth going to the mr or just go with the IX? od there a big difference between the evo and the sti? im basically looking for a good reliable car that i can tune as i go. ive tried to searching this site and got a lot of info, but it's just upgrades. and ive notice that a lot people were complaining about there trannys. please any help would be appreaciated. thanks everyone.
I will try to help you out a bit, Evos are hardcore, they are only interested in taking corners as fast as possible. Evos ride harsh, and have little to no creature comforts. That is what people love and hate about them. To me an MR (MRs have a slight issue with their trans, but if not overly abused I think you would have no worries) upgrade is not worth it, but that is a personal choice. As for the evo-sti debate....since you like to tune you should overlook a subie, from what I can tell they are hard and exspensive to tune. That is my 2 cents...there is a ton of info on this board so look around. I hope to welcome you to the club soon cause Evos are unbeleivable cars.
I don't know where this "tath133 is xcoming from but my 06 MR Evo rides very nicely no harshness at all. Obviously he hasnt ridden ina MR. I bought a MR because you can find them at Great prices..do a WWW search ---autotrader---go and buy one you will be glad you did. The apparent reason that 99% of the people on this forum bought an EVO is that they are so MOD friendly. With just a few slight Mods you can have bigger power. It's also like you are driving a car that not many people have. I can carry 4 adults in my Evo with no problems. I can get 22MPG also. it is very reliable if treated as it should be. It's your choice but for a family/performance 4 door the Evo can't be beat. IMHO..I would suggest the MR it has a 6speed tranny, and aluminum body panels and the bilstein shocks which are great as is but can be revalved for even better performance.
I've never owned a G35, but I've driven a few since I used to work at a car dealership, and we'd have used G35s here and there. I'm also on my second Evo IX. Regarding the power, the Evo has a bit more. The G35 always felt a bit heavy to me, which also made it feel slower to me. After driving it, the Evo felt much more nimble, which helped me further appreciate my car.
Personally, this is how I describe the whole MR debate. It is definitely worth $36,000, but it's not worth the $4,000 premium over a standard IX, especially with the SE available now (which comes with some of the MR goodies, like HIDs, aluminum roof, BBS wheels). However, I think you should look into one for the smoother ride (from the Bilsteins) and lower cruising rpms (from the 6-speed) since you now have a family. I don't think your significant other would particularly enjoy the jarring ride, and I'd want my baby to be as comfortable too. So for your particular case, I'd recommend the MR or the SE, depending on whether or not you want the smoother ride (nothing drastically smoother, but every little bit helps). Keep in mind that despite having lower cruising rpms, the 6-speed is actually rated 1 mpg lower compared to the standard 5-speed.
Regarding the STI, it's all up to preference. I'm not going to say who's faster or whatever, but the STI tends to be a more comfortable ride (since its handling isn't as razor-sharp as the Evo's). Also, since you are a family man, the Subaru's crash ratings are a lot better than the Evo's, plus it has front side airbags. (As a side note, while the Evo lacks side airbags and has less-than-stellar crash ratings, from what I remember, the REAR side impact ratings were actually decent, which is where your baby would be.) I guess you'll just have to be more of a defensive driver if you get the Evo.

if youre really interested in buying an evo, this is what i did and it worked out pretty well.
1. go to the dealership that has one you like (actually go to multiple dealerships), sit down with a guy, get his business card, leave your name, get a quote.
2. come back in two weeks, ask about the exact same car.
3. ask to see the invoice, tell them you would like to know how long it has been on their lot.
4. let them run a credit check.
5. get the car at a $1500 loss for the dealership.
they marked the car for 38.7K, i got it for 31.5. on the invoice, this dealership paid 33k, and by the second time i came to look at the same car and asked to see their records, i found it had been sitting on their lot for 152 days. i also went on a saturday when there was very bad weather. as luck had it, the dealership moved all of 1 car that whole weekend. bingo, new MR at a good price.
btw, i just moved like 200 lbs of stuff in the trunk of the car today from Sam's. the MR has better suspension compliance than my 5 series (admittedly modded) and i know how important a reasonable ride is as i live in DC, which almost qualifies for a third world country. and all you need are two mods: an exhaust and a tune and pow you've got a car that with a complete motor and chassis package that is faster than 95% can properly drive. seriously, the MR has such a ridiculously good suspension (though i hate the front wheel gap) i still have a hard time believing this car cost as little as it does. btw, i'm getting 20 miles to a gallon, 40% of my commute time spent in city traffic, and i am not shy on throttle.
here's the irony of it all: i bought the evo because i didn't want yet another reasonable car. but the MR is quite good in other areas besides its most obvious quality (being a beastly sports car) that in the end it was the most reasonable thing to do (as far as buying a car goes).
last thing - do you think that today's G35 will still excite you when the next generation of G35 debuts? evo vi still gets me excited. not so much with the previous generation of (insert brand name here) luxury sedan.

My 8 has an MR suspension.
