Precisely one of the reasons I never liked K&N. I've seen too many fouled MAF's in M3's, eventually causing problems (unless you take the MAF out and clean of with electrical contact spray). I'm happy with the BMC. I'd suggest those looking to stay with the stock airbox in their Evo also give this company a look.

They make really nice cone filters with the inverse cone tops as well that out flow the equivelent K&N.
