is aftermarket ic piping really necesary?
i am just wondering if upgrading the ic piping is really necessary...because it seems to me as if its a waste of money......what do u guys think...
The stock upper IC pipe isnt very restrictive- in fact there are some after market kits that have a SMALLER internal diameter than the stock upper IC pipe, such as the Helix kit. The Stock lower IC pipe bottle necks down to about 1.5" in one spot, so by switching to a peice that flows 2.5" such as the Nisei/Buschur/AMS peices people have noticed slightly more power and/or quicker turbo spool.
To tell you the truth, I couldnt feel the difference with the lower pipe. Having said that, I will be installing the upper pipe soon
If you search, you will find many posts where people felt better spool etc. with the lower pipe.
If you do not want to spent much money, just get a e-bay o2, TBE and remap - best bang for the buck mods...

The amount you gain will also depend on the mods you already have. If you are near stock than you probably will only see 5-10hp increases with slightly quicker spool, but if you are more heavily modded then at some point that 1.5" neckdown in the lower ic pipe starts to become a huge bottleneck. Also shortening the distance the air has to travel (length of pipe) will have a positive effect on response.
On these cars it's about every little bit of HP coming together. If your looking for a huge gain, then you're looking at a bigger Turbo, or Meth, but I don't see it making any sense to have stock piping with those mods. Just my opinion.
