yes and no. the EVO's are all made for 93+octane. however for example, the VW Touraeg with the TDI V10 (codename Stump Puller) was only 45 state legal so it couldn't b sold in CA, MA, VT, ME, or NY. the same goes for the 2007 Mercedes Benz E320 CDI Bluetec. it is also 45 state legal but the 2008model will b 50 state legal but they have to add "urea injection" to get it to pass CA diesel emissions...

Shell seems to be making the most power in the Southwest/west coast, whereas Sunoco is doing well on the east coast. 2 throw a wrench in the mix, the big turbo rotary crowd down here in Miami swears by 7-11 gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the evo def. wants 93 or better. the ecu is adaptive like said above. the california Evos are def. the slowest of the bunch because of our wonderful 91oct fuel.

you can thank our local treehuggin kalifornia legislators for that one...

one thing is funny though, years ago Arnold was the only one that DID NOT sign the bill for alternative fuels-e85. now i see him on tv telling us that we need to help save the planet and conserve our fuels...WTF?!!??!?!!? SIGN THE MF BILL FOR E85 FOR KALIFORNIA AND WE WILL BE JAKASS...

All of the cars basically have adopted california emission standards. Years ago, on the DSM's, they had two types of ECU's.. A California only ecu (which had the EGR temp sensor) and Federal ecu (EGR with no temp sensor). Nowadays they are all pretty much california ECU's. Im just glad I don't have to deal with the 91 **** gas anymore, but not I just have to deal with the other **** in NJ hahaha.

Actually, to nitpick, the Touareg was sold in CA for one year only. My brother has one here

Screw you California! Trying to save our air, water and resources...bastards. Just give us 94 octane and add another 20 cents in tax to the total...I'll pay it. What's another 50 cents when we're already paying $3.70+ / gal for ****ty 91 octane?

I think the bottom line is, get your car custom tuned so you don't have to worry about what the stock evo is tuned for.
+1 been using 91octane very first tank and have always been..0 knock till rpm pings out!! or thats what AL showed me when he tuned it and ask what kind of gas i was using.. stupid CA i hate paying $3.50+

Believe it or not, your evo is tuned by mitsu to run on 98 octane fuel. Look it up in your manual. It's pretty crazy it says you can even run on ethanol and other alternative fuels if necessary, but it wants 98...

Holy @#$#. you guys pay that much for 91, wow. guess there is one good reason to live in the south....93 oct=$2.89, 101 oct (texaco)= $4.25

I too think all the cars are the same, I don't think the CA cars have a different map they use. Also, Shell is one of the best.
Check Out this Site This proves who has the best fuel.

Some CA vehicles (like the 08 lancer) have small changes and tweaks to lower the emissions. Some do not (EVOs).

They run fine on 91 and 93 octane stock. We have 91,92,93,94,100,104,110,116 verisons of our flashes available.

After I posted this thread, I started thinking the same thing regarding having to reset the ECU.

It seems that even if you had an aftermarket ECU re-flash tuned for 93 octane you would still have to reset the ECU if you started running 91 octane.

Does anyone think this is sound logic?

Thanks again for all these responses--some good insight.

/\ no. the logic there doesnt sound right. the 93 oct map is tuned leaner than the 91 map. timing is also different. reseting the ecu wont help 93-91. it will help the other way 91-93.

does anyone else agree??
