So I made one little mistake, I posted a couple of messages in other forums before I posted here. Sorry about that.
I'm new here, new to Mitsubishi cars being mostly a Ford man all of my life. With it being time to buy a new car I've spent about a year thinking about what I want and what fits that need. Although I've had no problems with Ford - the Escorts & Mustangs I've driven have all been great cars - I deliberately cast the net far and wide.
My criteria were (in order of importance):
a) sporty, fun to drive with handling being the most important characteristic
b) decent fuel economy (upper 20s or better for highway)
c) under $25k with options included (Sirius)
d) automatic with manual shifting capabilities (auto to please the wife; manual to please me)
e) good looking
f) four doors (to haul wife and kid around)
For the last 2, 3 months it looked to be down to the Mazda 6 or the Mazda 3, in both cases the 4 cyl (the hatchback for the 3). Nice cars, the 3 is definitely a rocket (coming from a Escort wagon folks, so put it in perspective). The only thing left was to finalize the options and pick a date.
And then about a month ago I saw an ad for the 08 Lancer. Definitely a hot looking car (IMO). I didn't need the ads to tell me the front end looked like a shark, my first thought was that whoever designed it must like sharks. I loved it. I'd heard of Evos, to be sure, but not much on the base Lancer. I've never owned a Mitsubishi (never owned anything Japanese!) and no one I know has either. Closest I can come is one friend that owns a Sonata, or if you count the fact that my 97 Escort was for all intents and purposes a Mazda design.
So I started doing research; first to determine if the car indeed merited a closer look (it did), then a test drive (very nice!) and now the last week trying to find something, anything, that would cast a negative light on the car in terms of reliability, anything. So far, the Lancer wins on all counts. Sometime in the next week or so I'll be calling dealers and start talking price & probably how long I'll have to wait to get the car. None of the dealers around here have the fully loaded electric blue GTS - and that's what I want.
The funny thing is, a good stereo and a GPS navigation system were not on my list of things I wanted on a car, but with the Lancer I can add those on and still be under the 25k limit I set. Nice job Mitsubishi! Build more cars like this one, I guarantee more people will buy them.
If you're wondering why the name - I'm originally from Oklahoma but I'm an Army brat; I've lived in Germany, Texas, and since I graduated from college Connecticut and now Maryland. But I still love my home state and someday hope to be back there. And that, in many people's minds, makes me crazy.
