Dealership or 1st owner or me?

Yesterday, I went down to a dealership in Medford, MA called "Grava Mitsubishi" due to the 3 open recalls. During the recalls, one of the mechanics who was working on my car was trying to reflash? my car (or whatever he was doing). During that process, nothing went well I guess, and they called me up to discuss something when I was sitting tight and waiting for my car. When I got there, the service manager was telling me that I had to get a new ECU(Or PCM) for my car and would cost me about $900 plus labor. I was so ridiculed and frustrated first of all, and decided to tow my car back to my place. I talked to one of the members today and hes stating that it is not my fault. I would like to know you guys' opinions on this one.
These are the facts to make you understand the situation better;
1. It's stock ECU from 03' Evo 8. no MR and I cannot figure which kind.
2. I am not the first owner of the car and the warranty on the car has been expired.
3. The dealership is stating that they would not warranty it, nor they would not pay for it, because it was modified from the previous owner.
4. My car was fine before went into the shop, and now its not even starting the engine.
5. I saw the wire and it was truly seen as modified kind of. Again, I am not really familiar with cars at all, so based on my observation, it looked like some of the wires has been cut and pasted back together with tapes, and there were some buttons those click up upon the wires(called "butt something" but cant remember). Even though it was modified, if there were problems with it, how could I have been driving the car for 6months without a problem except the p0300 misfire code?????
Please give me your opinions about whose fault is it and who is responsible for it and what the hell I should do about it. The car is sitting on my garage since last night.
and this is the lists of the recalls;
1. oxygen sensor harness corrosion code# C0303H
2. Evo SMVSS certification label code#C0401H - I think this is the part where he did something with my car.
3. Lancer/Outlander Fan controller C0409Z

The previous owner may have had the ECU flashed by a company that locks the ECU to protect their particular flashes. When the dealer tried to re-flash it, it may have locked the ECU altogether.

Try to contact the original owner if possible.

In my opinion modified or not, if the stealership did something that made the car quit working I would fight them to have them replace it.

Did you purchase the car from a stealership? If so, go back to that stealership and have them fix the f'up.

The ecu might have been locked by ecutek and the tool the techinician was using couldn't get a signal from the ecu.

I just hung up my call with the service manager, because he is acting like a fXXXface. I did not purchase the car from the dealership, and the guy who bought it from is saying it has nothing to do with him because its already SOLD. I am stuck here and trying to call the owner of the dealership on Monday. And how do you figure out if the ecu is really burned up or not. my headlights and every single electronic things come on in the interior, but the car would not start.

If it is indeed locked, you might be able to unlock it yourself with the unlocker tool. Go to Aktivematrix to find info for that. You'll need a tactrix cable (roughly $80), and a reflash (pricing depends on where you get it). It might just be easier to fix this yourself, than to deal with the dealership. And would most definitely be less expensive. And you could probably get some more powa if you do it this way.

The ECU is most likely locked, not burnt up. Burning up an ECU is extremely rare.

One problem that you are going to face though is that the immobilzer code is on your ECU so unless you can get the original map of your ECU and have it flashed back onto it your stuck.

I find it hard to believe that even with the ECU locked though that the stealership could not flash it back to stock. There has to be a way to circumvent the ECU lock out. $0.02 is mine, don't know how much it's worth to you though.

I'm always surprised that I hear these cars retain their resale value. I wouldn't touch a used EVO with a ten foot pole.
