I've owned both. I gave up my 2005 M3 for the Evo.

In a nutshell... M3 is a great GT cruiser, comfortable interior, German ergonomics, expensive.

It is on the other hand a lousy track car. You'd need to invest ALOT into its suspension and braking systems in order to get a viable machine.

The Evo on the other hand doesn't have the same finesse that the M3 has. But, it is a focused performance vehicle; something that can be used in the city, and on the track. The chassis of the Evo is very focused, even out of the box.

Bottom line; go with what you like. But be advised, the M3 is not a cheap vehicle to own, maintain and mod. For example, my PSS9's and camber plates set me back about 2K. The GruppeM exhaust (just muffler) was $1200 used. The Borla's which you see in the pictures were $800 new - also just the muffler... it begins to add up. Take it from someone that's owned BMW's for years.

My old ride:

If you have any specific questions about the M3 though, I'd be glad to answer.

P.S. To shivaswrath: the M3 is NOT slow. Stock for stock, the M3 will eat the Evo alive past 3rd gear. I do however agree with everything else you've written.

if anybody call the evo a boyracer, he or she has no idea what the evo capable to do.
certanly he never sit in the Evo when it was driven hard.and i'm not refering stupid high way pulls.wich required no skill and talent, pluss you can't judge the car based on that .Only just the power.

he is in college, think about it this way, when your out interviewing and the human resource sees you pull up in an evo what would they think of you?
now if you pulled up in the bmw what would they think of you? Now hear me out on this one and dont get all mad ok..
My thinking is this, with the evo human resources will say " this guy is not "class" and dont care about the image he projects on the poeple around him. He likes to cut corners to get what he wants, he is cheap"

with the BMW, "this guy likes to make a good impression and look "good" to others around him. he dont like to cut corners"

I own an evo so im not saying owners of either car are in any way like what I said.
however we live in a crazy world and people do JUDGE others on stupid stuff.
a company does not want a person to cut corners to get work done, first its not safe and can be very detramental to a company's reputation.
if you say you dont care about the interor of your car and just care about speed, then aren't you cutting corners to get what you want? no body likes "discomfort or wants less of anything. we settled for less interior inorder to get the speed we want without having to spend a lot more money.

anyways you get the point im making,
my advice dude is by the bmw and get the job, then buy the evo after you worked and proved yourself.

Explain

You say you "...love the EVO.", but your comments seem to have you leaning towards the M3. Maybe a little clarification will help.

I know BMW's can last forever but at what cost?

Reliability concerns me but so don't gear grinds, tcase problems and clutch issues of the EVO's

Isn't this the same point being reiterated? Either case if you are that concerned buy a Toyota product.

EVO IX:

Pros:

Cheaper to maintain I think? Same as above.

Cons:

The car is very raw compared to the BMW If this a con you'd be much happier with the M3.

When I see and EVO I see a serious machine, when I see the M3 I see a serious machine with some sex too If you're looking for that main stream appeal the M3 is for you.

The EVO isn't good for rifling through the gears in the straights and can cost me in clutch if not careful Why?... I can't take the car to the 1/4 mile track without being scared of breaking stuff... no breaking the rear loose like in the RWD M3. If you think aren't concerns with drag racing a rwd car then you are mistaken.

What do you guys think?

i would say, they will judge you how you represent your car...
you can have a BMW M5 and people still call you as a clown...
and a mean time, see the Evo and ask: nice car what is the deal about it?
It happends. Many times...
4 year past buy since the Evo came here, the car people know what is it.Even cops don't think anymore, like it's a hooked up Honda.
Talk about girls... some prefer the JDM over anything.
so i still have to disagree.
I remember the first years when the people had those ,smiles on they face, when they saw my wing. Forget the cops back then...
And i remember those german knights phony smile first and schoked face after...
hey i miss those days....
but now it all changed . It will be become as a japan icon like it did in europa, where those german cars came from.
they all have those little cold hands on they hearts, when you pull next to them.Because they know anything could happen...
and thats is on they face. Oh just not now, my girfriend is next to me, what if i loose...
that is pricless

speaks the truth.

This is why my sales reps from mitsu like EVO buyers, they know exactly what they want(most of the time).

it's really a different type of car. i have never heard anyone said that "i wish i had got a M3 instead of Evo."
i think M3 is better for you. You want something to go fast but show off at same time. you are not a potential forever evo owner. evo is for hardcore DRIVERS.

Man i live in Longview tx. Everybody here tells me thats a nice body kit on my lancer. I used to live in Pa. where immeadiatly people knew the car. Now the only people who know what my car is is the people who drive honda's. It is so hilarious when a guy in a salleen mustang not a gt500 or 03 cobra just a saleen drives up and asks you if your car gets faster as it gets louder and just laugh at first. And then you just keep laughing as they are pissed off that they have no hope in ever catching up. Or for that matter most of the cars on the road. All you need are cams, alky, and a great tune, And you can dissapoint just about everybody around you. And you can only be happier, and this can be done CHEAP. Thats why there is a following among the owners here. Clear and simple!

A car that flows with the corners at night time when you don't want the car to be Carrera GT stiff.
Keep in mind that I have owned 4 M cars so I am not biased against them but think twice about your "built so well comment". E36, E46, E36/7, E36/8, Z8 and several other models are suffering from structural issues. Among them are trunk floors and diff mounts tearing free from the rear frame rails and the front shock towers bending and deforming under normal driving conditions on the Z8. Don't ask me how I know this! I could show you pictures that would make you cringe! Not only this but S54 cars suffered from engine problems. Ask me about the rod that punched through the side of my block with 12K non abused miles on the car, or the trannys in both my S54 cars that needed to be recalled and rebuilt with under 20K miles on them.

Not that the Evo is free from issues, just don't think that BMW is without them. Non of my past experiences will prevent me from owning many more M cars, just trying to put things in perspective.

BTW, Out of the last 20 cars that I have owned, the only ones that I would venture to call truly well built and truly solid were a Mercedes C36 and Porsche GT3.

Simple fact-they don't build them like they used to!
