Weird noise in higher gears?

Hey guys. Been centuries since I've posted on here. I could use some opinions. I have a 2003 bone stock evo with 63,000 miles that's had it's original clutch replaced recently with another oem one. No other problems ever with this car. However, just today, when accelerating and shifting into higher gears, the car makes what sounds like a whining sound. Now I understand this car is loud (I've owned it since new), but this is a new sound. The funny thing is it actually sounds awesome. But it's not normal. Accelerate gently or hard, as you shift through the gears, the whine becomes louder and higher pitched. At a stop with the engine running, hitting the gas does not emit the sound at all, even with the clutch engaged and in gear; only when you're actually driving around. Almost sounds like those GT cars, when they're accelerating, you can hear the transaxle (I think that's what it is) as they go faster and faster. If you know what I'm talking about, it sounds real cool. But I have no idea why I'm hearing this now in my car. The car runs perfect, I just can't put my finger on what could be wrong. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'll probably be taking it in to get looked at. Sorry for the long post.

sounds like the transfer case to me too. not good. when did you have the clutch changed? 9 times out of 10, TC failure is from the clutch installer not filling it with the right fluid. did you check the fluid to see if it's full? if not, i'd do that immediately. sometimes they lose the o-ring between the trans and TC and the fluid will slowly leak out.

Not sure if these cars are similar to regular cars/trucks. I had the bearings in my ring and pinion start to whine when they started to go. Usually the pitch gets higher the faster you go and you hear is more when you get on the throttle and less when you take your foor off of it.

My money is on the transfer case, however don't overlook the fact that you could have a boost leak.. I mean you had someone tinkering with your car (Dropped the entire trans) so possibly a hose is disconnected, or something is leaking somewhere which will make a loud almost wistling noise. Just a thought......

well he did say that it was only happening when he was driving so wouldnt that rule out the boost leak as you should hear it at a stop?

Ummm, only hearing the noise while driving it would not rule out a boost leak. 99% of the time you will not hear a boost leak unless you are under (Wait for it) oh yeah, boost. Which means you would have to be in boost, therefore driving the car!

Under the vacuum you would most likely not notice the leak since it probably would not be leaking (no boost).

Like I said, my money is on the death whine, just did not want him to forget to check for a possible boost leak....

thx for the replies guys. i would have to say that it's prob the TC. it's not a boost leak, i got on it and it takes off just fine. runs great even with 63,000 miles. but had the oem clutch replaced about 1,500 miles ago, and i had posted a long time ago when it got replaced (by an outside mechanic) that the new oem clutch felt much softer than the one it replaced. it felt like jello. so i'm thinkin it might very well have to do with the wrong fluid being put in. i'm getting it checked out on tues. thanks again for ur input.

yep...after doing some more searches, i've come to the conclusion that it's gotta be the TC. from what others have described, it sounds identical to my problem...this so called "death whine". i'm guessing the mechanic who installed my new OEM clutch put in the wrong fluid. what i'm wondering is i have to drive to a couple places kinda far (50 miles plus) in the next couple days b4 i take it to the dealership. is this really bad for it, or is it toast anyway?

Toast anyway. I drove mine (wen't out on my trip to Michigan from Indy) for 800 miles with the loud death whine. You can't further dammage it, any worse then it is.
