good luck with the buy. for that price with those miles, sounds like a really good deal.

the guy wanted the sun sound leather package but they didnt have one on the lot with that option so the dealer had the recaros reapholstered with leather from a local shop for free. and the bumper was cracked b/c his wife drove it and grounded out against a curb and he used a dremel to cut off the cracked pieces. the bumper is being replaced.

Not too bad of a deal - especially with what he's doing for you to make the sale...

I bought my 03 Evo 2 months ago for $16K with 45k miles on it... totally unmolested (just a turbo timer) with only a cracked windshield and peeling wing. Seller was my mechanic and he owned it since new.

Oh, and it's yellow too. I was never a yellow car guy, but Evos just scream to be yellow.... and FYI - Its a proven fact (at least if you go to other car boards!) that yellow cars ARE faster....

Angry ?!!

So I picked up the car today and on the way back I wanted to see what it could do so I hit the accelerator about 3/4 of the way down in 5th. Shortly thereafter coolant sprays out of the vent on the hood and all over the windshield and the car starts to overheat. I pulled over to wait for the car to cool down, by that time the thermostat had gotten all the way up to the H. I took a look under the hood and noticed that the vacuum hose attached to the wastegate had blown off, causing the car to overboost which I think caused one of the hoses in the cooling system to come loose and thus spray coolant everywhere. The coolant hose that came loose is a small thin vacuum hose that looks like it goes to the intercooler or somewhere behind the front fender. Theres a good amount of slack in the hose so I really don't know where the side that came loose goes. I am going to get under the car and check the radiator shortly so I will post updates. When I was almost back and stopped at a light the car stalled on me 2-3 times as I was trying to disengage the clutch. This is ****ty.

opinions?

UPDATE: The small hose was the IC water spray hose that had blow apart at one of the joints, but I found another hose (hose that supplies coolant to the turbo) that had blown off and fixed that. This must have been the source of all the coolant that came through the hood vent.

Same Car?

I'm 99 % sure this is the same car that I emailed him about in the past. Seller is Robert?

Here's the story that i got:
Hi Chris, I'm going to attempt to answer your questions. If you need more clarification just let me know or give me a call at home or on my cell
- Does the car have any mods? No, it is completely stock.
- Has the car ever had other mods that have been
removed? Yes, it had a turbo upgrade and cams, along with coilovers.
- Who installed the mods? I installed the mods along with Doug at Topspeed here in Atlanta.
- What options does this car have? Does it have a
sunroof? HID's? Leather? The car does not have a sunroof. It does have HIDs and dealer added leather option. It has black leather seats. I wanted one with a SSL package, but the dealer offered me an option of purchasing this one and adding leather for free.
- Do you currently have the title, or is it financed? The car is still financed.
- If it's financed, who is it through? Are they local? It is financed through Centerone Financial (basically Mitsubishi). No they are not local. I think they are based in Florida.
- Are you the original owner? Yes, I bought the car brand new here in Duluth and have been the only owner. I'm a middle school teacher and I drove the car during the week to work, and rarely, if ever in the rain.
- Do you have records of all services? I've done all service work on the car, and I can provide you with a record of those.
- Have you had any problems fixed under warranty? Yes, I had the front Brembo calipers replaced under warranty because the red was fading on them. It's a typical problem on the 2003-04 Evos.
- Has the car ever been hit or been in an accident? The car has never been in an accident or been hit.
- Is there any scratches or damage to the paint? The paint is in excellent condition. Mitsubishi's do not have the best paint in the world(compared to previous cars I've owned), but it has no scratches, blemishes, etc. It has been garaged the entire time I've owned the car.
- Is the clutch the original stock clutch? When the turbo upgrade was put on the car, I also installed a Exedy Twin Carbon clutch. When the turbo upgrade came off, the stock clutch was put back in.
- What is tire condition? The car is on the original Advans it came from the lot on. It could use a new set and I plan to replace them with the same tires before the car is purchased or I'd take $1000 off the price of the car since that's approx. the cost of those tires. I will also be replacing the brake pads before the car is purchased also, since it is still on the original ones.
- Why are you selling the car? I truly hate to get rid of the car, but I need to get rid of it for two reasons. My wife and I had our first child March 8th, a baby girl, and we are moving to Orlando, Florida where I plan to go to law school. I won't have time to enjoy this car and fulfill the obligations of being a good father, husband, or student in school. Since we had our daughter, we've already purchased another more "family oriented" car, so the Evo has to go.

Again, hopefully I've answered your questions, if not shoot me another email or give me a call.

Regards,

Robert

Yeah thats him... hmm turbo upgrade eh I will have to speak with him about that, its funny b/c he never mentioned that once, nor the clutch, cams, or coilovers. There are a few things I have noticed that make me believe what you are telling me, there are no clamps whatsoever holding the intake tube onto the turbo and the vacuum hose going to the wastegate keeps coming loose. It's missing a bolt where one of the coolant hoses should be mounted and a few other random bolts that secure the intercooler piping. Basically, the car looks like its been messed with. I did a cooling system flush and found the spot where the coolant line blew off: it was the line going from the side of the block (waterpump?) to the turbo. Everything seems to be in order now except for that pesty vacuum hose which makes me very weary about driving the car the way its meant to be driven. I was thinking about using a hoseclamp on there, has anyone ever had a problem like this?

the car overheated, would it be wise for me to change the oil after something like this happened?

nuggy I really appreciate you taking the time to post that, I would have never known otherwise...

I am going to be taking the car to a mitsubishi dealer around here to have those odds and ends straightened out and have them make sure that the motor is still in good health.

once again, I will keep you guys posted. If one of the mods feels that this thread would get more responses in another section feel free to relocate it.

UPDATE: I just went out and gave the car a little bit of a workout after reading that last post. I checked the that hose going to the wastegate prior to pulling out of the driveway and it was on firmly. After I had driven for a little bit keeping the rpms under 5 and shifting even earlier in first and second I decided to give it a good 1st-2nd pull. Things seemed to be fine, the boost spiking around 1.1-1.2 bars but as soon as reached optimal boost in second the gauge kept climbing almost hitting 2 bars signifying that the hose had once again blown off. So I drove back to my house keeping the car out of boost (probably the most unsatisfying driving experience ever) and got back to the drawing board. This is really pissing me off, the car should be capable of handling this type of driving esp. with low miles, something isn't right. I have driven my previous car, a mazda6s much harder on a daily basis and it took the beating like a champ with no problems whatsoever. And that car was modded, this evo only has a hks air filter on it...

Lesson learned - Always ask a million questions. If they are asked directly, most people will tell you the truth. If you don't ask, they probably won't volunteer any questionable information.

Knowing these cars are regularly modded and then put back to stock, you need to be very careful.

Just because this car was modded and put back to stock, doesn't automatically make it bad or damaged. If it was done and undone right, it may still be fine. Topspeed is a respected tuner. What also matters is how the car was driven once modded. I'm not sure how long the mods were on the car. If the original tires lasted ~18k miles, the car wasn't driven as hard as many others i've read about here on evom. There is just more risk of something big happening in the future - T-case, clutch, etc.

Many people have done more to the car than this had with success.

I called up topspeed and spoke with that guy Doug and everything checked out, the mods were only on there for a thousand miles (he said he put about 10-12k into the car it had a gt35 and was pushing 500whp, he had done all the work for a magazine shoot but then ended up never going through with it) then he reverted it back to stock. Only thing is that Doug said when he did the turbo upgrade he had an aem computer in there and he also mentioned that Robert's stock ECU had been previously flashed by dynoflash. But according to Robert the dealer reflashed his stock ECU for a recall and the dynoflash isn't on there anymore but I didn't think that dealerships overwrote reflashes. Doug said that unless Robert traded ECUs with someone then the flash would still be on there. Now that makes me wonder what mods he had when he had the dynoflash done and if the car is tuned for mods then running it stock with the flash may/may not be causing problems under peak boost (i.e. WGA vacuum hose refusing to stay on).
