I dont know if you could tell if thats a evo VII or VIII engine or not, but check it out.

From what I've read, the problems are on the Eclipse's... but since this has a diff. engine, do you think that would resolve/remove the problem, seeing as the ppl who had it had stock cars/engines?
from looking at it i cant tell...it looks like a USDM 4G63...thats about all i can tell you... dont trust anyone that says they have swaped for an evo 3 motor, its nore likely that its a 6 bolt USDM than a JDM evo 3. evn though im guessing a evo 3 is a 6 bolt...im guessing he is lying...unless the serial numbers on the motor match up....plus your gonna have issues with emissions...if you do an engine swap it has to be the same year or newer.
im telling you the DSM world gets shady. i know cause i was in it for some time... i would go for a car like that TSi that has all the receipts and you at least know exactly what your getting...

Would buying a new aftermarket 7 bolt crankshaft remove the chances of getting crank walk?

no. the problem lies within the block itself. the oiling system. the oil squirters on the inside of the block are the culprit. the earlier blocks took the oil from the main oil galley instead of taking oil just before the main bearings.
