Should I have just bought the IX?

I drive an 8 now... but god I love the 9. I just bought this car not even 2 weeks ago and my overall goal is mid 11s in this car. Ive read that the IX is a piece of cake to get in the 11s with the stock turbo, but w/o alchy injection, is a mid 11 possible on the stock turbo?

What other differences are there besides MIVEC? I've heard of different cams, another lb or two of boost, perhaps more aggressive tuning?

The IX has a slightly lighter compressor wheel in the turbo. And also a larger hotside. Stock boost on a VIII is like 19.5 and on a IX I think is like 20.5. I've never seen a stock IX so I don't know. The quickest way to 11's on an VIII is this:

Turboback exhaust, MBC, Metal BOV, Intake or drop in filter, 272's or similar cams, custom tune, boost gauge, and some 104 or 109 and you're just about there!

What about swapping a EVO9 turbo instead?... Or would it not be worth the trouble?

Basically the difference between the VIII and IX with the same mods is 30-35 whp on stock turbo. The IX is definetly way to go if you can afford one but the VIII is not a bad car, just harder and more money for the same power. VIII with cams = IX without cams basically (stock turbo).

Just get the 9 turbo, its an easy swap, and is not expensive at all (you can snag used turbo's for like $400!)

The VIII's are lighter and have better gearing for drag racing.

Better gearing? Wrong

Lighter? By like 50Lbs or less, not really a big difference

To the originator of the the thread, getting to the 11s on the stock turbo even with the IX is no piece of cake. Most EVO IX owners do not run 11s on the stock turbo with simple bolt ons, a few have, but they have the key ingredient that many EVO owners including myself do not possess- very above average driving skill

Doesn't anyone want to actually put forth any effort to make there **** faster anymore? I have an 8. It's alot faster than a 9. And I did all the work.

You can just put different cams and get a IX turbo. Since it looks like your going drag, you wouldn't want MIVEC up top, only down low.
