It helps reduce drag and makes your intercooler more efficient by not letting the air go underneath but through it, so no it is not useless!

yeah, it is not useless for the reasons above plus it helps move air through the radiator. It works in part by helping creating a low pressure zone in the engine bay behind the rad and intercooler. With low pressure behind (the IC and rad) and higher pressure in the front, it "forces" air past both.

It also helps reduce drag by moving air away from the front wheels, and channels some air to the brakes thought there are much better ways to get rotor cooling (like the ams or forge kits).

Have a intercooler pipe blow off one time and you will never put that plastic thing back on your car again.

Good reasons have been cited, and I'll also bet it keeps a lot of road grime out of your engine compartment. But even if you didn't know what it's for I'd be reluctant to assume it serves no purpose. I don't see why Mitsubishi would invest so much in a part that served no purpose and that few would see, in an otherwise so purposefully designed car. What benefit would come from removing it? Weight is insignificant, the whole thing can't weigh much more than a pound, and if it's a looks thing, who's going to see it anyway?

well im not sure if youve spenmuch time working under your car.... but to me that crap has been in the way just abought every step of the way.... i suppose thats why ill be pulling it off, the only reason i can see leaving it would be to keep some water off the engine..but thats still a guess
