Need help, somebody talk me out of it.
Need help, somebody talk me out of it.
Yes this is a desperate cry for help. Can somebody please talk me out of buying an EVO... Tell me all the things I'll hate about it, lie if you have to.
I am returning my new GTO under the lemon law (surprised?) and the bug for this Mitsu has hit me hard. When I bought the GTO in August 06 I hadn't considered the EVO or STi because I wanted something that looked a little more civil or grown-up... not a jab at all, I think you guys understand what I'm saying. So fast forward not even a month and this POS GM is in the shop CONSTANTLY for repair including a new LS2 at 9000 miles. When I settled with GM to buy back my car I said F-it I'm gonna test drive the EVO and STi... As boring as I thought the GTO looked, I ended up getting a lot more attention than I had anticipated so I figured I could hanle the attention that comes with driving a car equipped with vortex generators. Seriously WTF are those things?!?!
Moving on (Sorry I'm a rambler). I test drove a red EVO IX MR and long story short I have never driven anything like it... I was beyond the definition of SEG and probably closer to a state of insanity. I have driven TONS of fun/sporty rides from the new Elise, porsche, vipers, bmw, corvette, etc and only the lotus could compare on a visceral level. The turbo is intoxicating.
It gets harder and harder to stop my impulse to get one everytime I see one on the road... Talked to a guy in a White MR while we were lined up at a light the other day. I dont know if he caught me drooling but when he gave me props I confessed about losing the car to the gods of quality assurance.
So. Help me be rational. I dont need an EVO. Track days are expensive. Insurance is insane. Tires? forget it. Civic daily drivers are fine, right? Maybe an RSX with some mods and a sweet wing?

umm if u are coming from a gto i am gonna bet that u won't be happy with something that doesn't feel as fast or faster. so i will say if u like the evo so much bite the bullet and buy one.
It was largely thanks to the Elise that I drove for a weekend recently that made me suddenly appreciate the art of driving and driver input/reward over brute force and grand touring reflexes. The GTO is an incredibly fast car and a great deal as well (when made well) so it will be tough to find a bang-for-buck replacement no doubt. I just can't do the Elise because it is too much money for something so incredibly impractical.
you've come to the wrong place, friend.
think of all the different circles that the evo runs in. drag race, road race, pick up groceries, commute to work (i get >27mpg highway) , put a baby seat in the back, win 4th best handling car in america (#3. lotus, #2 cayman s, #1 GT3). the evo can do a lot of things well and gives you options.
the single thing that the evo does not do, though, is pull chicks. it's more like a dude magnet.
so $30k isn't exactly free. but it's pretty cheap for what you're getting.

oh wait, no i don't. those are fun things even more fun in an evo. closing with and passing superior cars whilst on stock suspension is a pretty exciting feeling.

It is hard to talk you out of something you will probably like a lot. I liked my Evo a lot but it I felt like it was time for me to move on. I traded mine in for a G35 sedan. When I had my Evo I was all about modding it, making more horsopower, but I never had the will or the time to track the thing and make use of it. That plus I had no warranty left, and the paint was getting bad fast, especially on the hood. It can be an expensive habit to own a car like that, especially when you get into modding it. I owed no money on it so I decided to get out of it while it was still in pretty great condition. The G35 is a step back in certain aspects but for my needs it is a better all around car. It makes the most sense to buy what fits you.

Hrm....if you want a DD....that's 4d boosted. I think subaru follows warrenty. As far as evo's go. Its a hardcore car..nothing like it. Handling is inprecable. The more you add the more it turns on you. It use to be a sweet comfy ride. Now its like I'm riding on top of a dragon. Its unforgiving. Sweet but suttle. Tight but loose. Angry yet calm. Ya get what I mean. We all got the evo to get an evo. S2k is in the price range. Even the lexus IS350. But we all choosed evo. That answer your question?

You don't need a car like this, but would u want one, of course. It is definetly the best bang for buck performance car you can get for 30k. Track days are expensive, breaking parts is expensive, insurance is bearable givin a good driving record, and tires well after the stockers go, just get some good all-seasons that will last longer than the stock advans. If it's too much of a boy racer look, ditch the wing and get black, the lines are less noticeable, things like the hood vent and the front bumper don't stand out as much.
heres something to think about..
my stock at the time EVO 9 was faster then one of my good buddys stock 6.0L goat
now with just the basic bolt on stuff like TBE, MBC, filter, and a tune its borderline comedy when we both mash on the gas.

The first time I saw an Evo was when I was looking for a car back in 2003. I was amazed at how expensive it was, even now, but I could never shake the feeling that I had to have one. I was pretty afraid that when I did buy it, I wouldn't like it. I had heard a few negative things like it's too jumpy, or the interior looks too plain. Then, a month ago, I test drove one for the first time. I fell in love! Who cares what the interior looks like, you can always add stuff. The performance is definitely there though. I bought one 2 days later, and never looked back, no regrets. Except for the insurance cost though.
