Just got my license plate
so, my license plate came in the mail today, and i've got two concerns:
1) no, that's not a typo - i only received one plate. i'd love to have a perfect excuse to use only the rear, but isn't it illegal in california to not have a clearly visible front plate?
2) if hell is frozen and california has let up on their laws, what do i do with the front bracket? that sucker looks like it's on pretty good.

Yeah, it sucks, but the front license plate is required. I ran without mine for the six years I lived in Orange County without any problems. But, I had several friends who go "fix-it" tickets because they didn't have their front plate. It's a risk, but not a big one. I'm lucky...I live in North Carolina now and the front plate is not required. Good luck man!
I only roll with the rear plate on. The front bracket was easy to take off. Only problem is, you're left with two or three large holes to deal with. You can either put some kind of hardware in the holes and paint them to match the bumper, or you can go to a local sign shop and have them make stickers out of colored vinyl that match your paint (this is the method I used):

You can't tell in this pic, but there are two stickers roughly 1" large over the two holes, and one 3/4" sticker too. You have to be in the right light to see them, but even then it's hard to tell...

If your car already had the front bracket already installed, there's a decent chance that cops won't mess with you, especially if you still have your registration sticker on the windshield. Cops are slightly better educated about Evos, and they seem to look for Evos with absolutely nothing attached to the front bumper rather than an empty bracket.
Well it is a law to have one in the front and rear, but on the big envelope that contains the plates, it does say something like, "In the event of one plate being issued, it must be on the back" or something. I remember on my first Evo, I went seven or eight months without putting EITHER of my plates on. I only put on my rear plate on my current Evo because I got a parking warning in my neighborhood for not moving my car, and they had looked up my license plate number through the VIN and gave me a warning for no license plates. I put the rear one on and haven't been bothered since.
