New to the EVO

Ditched my 2003 Turbo RSX-S this weekend. Picked up a new 06 Evo MR in graphite grey. Been looking around for a while now, but there have been no available MRs in the Missouri/St. Louis region where I live. Ended up having one shipped from Wisconsin to Chicago and I drove up there to pick it up this weekend.

Definately nice to finally have the evo, as much as I enjoyed the RSX I was looking for something new and I could never go back from owning a f/i vehicle.

Already planning to start modding. One of the main things that is tough to deal with is the stereo in car, granted I realize that isn't the fuction or the design ideal when it was brought to market, it's one of the first things I'm going to have to update prior to getting into the performance aspects.

Any evo owners from St. Louis in here?

I feel ya. I'm really thinking about ditching my turbo civic for a Evo MR. The one I'm looking at is in Cali.

yeah, i'm happy with my decision. I made it about 26 hours before ordering the first mod. Have a greddy turbo timer on the way. I'm going to wait about another 600 miles to finalize my break-in and them i'm going to move on to intercooler, intake and downpipe most likely in one fell swoop. I'm glad to have a car that I can start modding again. The rsx was at the point where I couldn't really mod anymore because there was too much done to it. the only thing I could have done was gradually go larger on the turbo and that's about it.

Anyone know what the stock clutch can hold on the EVOs?

You don't need to replace the intake, and really shouldn't until your ready to be tuned. You'll go into a lean condition whether you know it or not, and end up regretting it. AVOID THE K&N TYPHOON, seriously!

Also, unless you plan to upgrade your turbo real soon the stock fmic works very well.

Here's the best place to start, and will get you serious power gains with minimal cash.

FULL Turbo Back Exhaust, and since your there might as well do the o2 housing.
MBC (manual boost controller)
Walbro 255 (some don't think you need it, but for $70 its good piece of mind)
PSI guage, the factory one doesn't really go high enough

TUNE, extremely important. Most gains for the money, period. And if you absolutely positively must have an intake, install the same day you get tuned and don't buy the Typhoon.

yeah i ditch my rsx too for an evo. Just got tired of not having traction. Yeah tuning is the biggest difference in the evo. Just make sure u get tune after u put tbe, o2 housing, and fuel pump. U should be around 330+.

the rsx was putting 328 at the wheels on a moderate tune, so compared to my stock evo, yeah, it was faster. The difference is that the EVO has traction, the EVO is more reliable being that the engine is designed for boost and the EVO has a larger range for the ability to increase power.

I'm really happy with my choice.

When I dropped in the walbro into my rsx it was pretty easy. How is it on the EVO? One thing I dont want to do is make the exhaust obnoxious or droning. The RSX had custom 3 inch stainless turboback that is catless. It was extremely loud and extremely obnoxious. It was fine at first, but as I started driving the car as more of a daily driver when my nissan went down for the count, it wore on me fast.

How is the exhaust note for a turboback on the EVOs?

Also, I'll definately throw a boost gauge, EGT gauge and most likely an oil pressure guage in shortly. The positioning of the stock gauges aren't functional at all. Theres no way you can look away from the road and keep track of any of them while driving.

The main thing is that I'm really looking forward to working on the car again. I did all my work on the last car, I plan on doing the same for this. I'll be doing a lot of research to get intimate with the car, as i'm only vaguely familiar with the 4g63, as it's been a staple for a long time.

First mods should be a drop in filter, MBC, Turbo back Exhaust, o2 housing, walbro fuel pump, and a good tune. You should easily be at 330+whp.

You don't need an intercooler until you go bigger turbo.

How much did you get the MR for if you don't mind me asking?
