Evo lacking in top end power?

I've been floating around the forums here for a while reading up on stories and mods, etc. (should be getting my 06 MR in the next 2 or 3 weeks) But i have a question. I have been watching a lot of videos of where evos get killed on highway runs even if they are heavily modified. I know a lot of it is because most of the V8's they're running against are built more for top end. But is there something that holds the evo back from being more powerful in higher gears? Is it because it's an AWD?? or is it just geared too low for top end?? or is it a mix of multiple things?? and if so .. what is a setup i could use to get maximum top end power with out sacrificing my low end power. Please no answers of get the biggest turbo i can get.. i'd like some power below 6500 rpm lol.

Want top end? Here is what you need...

Bigger Turbo (w/ a stroker for your purposes) - 35r +
Better Gearing
Aerodynamically sound body kit

Its only a 4 cylinder my friend, you can't have the best of both worlds...

It was built to go around a track not down a freeway. Go buy a used c5 vette for 17k and spray on it, leave the evo for what it was intended for otherwise you will just have a car that handles like crap and is ok at freeway pulls.

woops sorry..yeah i meant above..thanks for the quick responses..how much more lag should i expect from a 35r than from the stock turbo, and by how much do you think it will lower my 0-60 times. I'm not trying to nag or be annoying.. but im having a hard choice deciding on where i want my power/torque

Full spool around 4.8K-5.5K depending on your setup, supporting mods etc...

Your 0-60 won't be improved that much more with more power necessarily since you are making the big power up top with a big turbo. If you go with a 50trim with every single bolt on + alky + clutch, you can probably knock off some 3 second 0-60mph times. Purely speculating though

If you build it staight for highway it can be very fast. Just keep in mind thats not what they were originally built to do. You can easily be alot better at highway raced with something designed to do it with, such as a Supra, etc. With that in mind, Evos still can do this. 42R is the best build for this, but it can also be done with a 35R, once again I suggest a 42R for this. Look at Buschur's site, I personally know and have seen the Evo on their site that is on this video.

http://www.buschurracing.com/video.htm

2nd Movie down on the left side. "Evolution of the Evolution" The owners name is Charles, his Evo is an absolute freak, these videos were of his car when he had a 35R. I know he now has a larger turbo setup and is a great deal faster than he is in these videos. Either way, his Evo is very fast on the Hwy, long video, but worth it. Enjoy.

convert it to rwd.lol.i think the main reason is because its awd. i think if the black ams built evo was rwd no car would stand a chance against it. i know that the engine in he evo is facing the wrong way for it to be rwd so its kinda impossible.

Wow, thought I was in the newbie section for a moment. Actually this belongs there to be honest.

You do not need a stroker for top end power, this is the absolute opposite.

I am not sure what videos you are watching, but 115-117 is possible on pump gas and cams with TBE, MBC, drop in and custom tune.

The MR has a a gearing advantage from 60-100mph over the 5sp.

Nowhere did I state that a stroker was needed. In fact the Evo in the video's that I was pointing out is still on the 2.0L motor. I have seen him beat a few very fast cars on the hwy, and as TTP said, a stroker is definitely not needed.

from what i've seen, and from the many evos i've driven, they pull very nicely top end. i mean, you're going to be hard pressed to pull like a c6 z06 top end, but with the correct mods it can easily be done from what i've seen. but just like the other guy said, the evo was never intended for high speed highway pulls. it's a track ready, street legal race car that happens to do pretty much everything well.
