Noob Question about Registration & Insurance
Ok, I am having the hardest time trying to register this Evo. The title still hasn't arrived after a month, and I haven't been able to drive it. To make a long story short, FINALLY this Friday my paperwork should arrive & I will be able to register it. Until I thought of another issue: insurance.
I know some of you drivers are under your parents name, and/or have your parents listed as the primary driver and you as the additional insured because rates are so damn high. But how many of you have the actual car loan and car registered under your name and an insurance policy in your parents name? I am getting too many different answers as to what I have to do, so I'm looking to the Evom community before I pull every hair out of my head.
Thank you for your time.

What's the deal with your title? That's just not right that it's been a month and you don't have it yet. Did you buy from a private party that didn't have the car paid off? Hope it comes soon.
When I was in college and high school (many years ago for this old guy), all my cars were titled in my name (loans in my name too) and I was under my parent's insurance policy. Most insurance companies will allow you to stay on your parent's policy until you are 25 years old. Then you're on your own.

The deal with this car is that I bought it from someone here on the Evom Marketplace. The banking process wasn't easy. He had a lien on it, so I paid it off with my loan. Very long story short, the car arrives (a week after it was picked up
.. i was enraged) with no title. It was in good condition, thank goodness. I had to wait for his bank to send the lien release papers to him (they didn't send it to the DMV for some unknown reason). A few days later, he realized they didn't send them to the DMV so he faxed it over to them. They were backed up with lien releases for about a week, so they couldn't process it. Now it finally arrived to him on Saturday, and it should get to me by Today; almost a month later.
Now the DMV is driving me crazy telling me I need to have the car under my own insurance policy in order to register it, and then another person says i can have it under my moms name, with an endorsement showing that I'm additional insured. I work at a commercial insurance company, and I got a quote with progressive. Same as all the others: $400/mo with 2 tickets, no points on my record.

That whole situation sucks. I learned that lesson the hard way years ago. I then decided to never by a car from a private party if it wasn't paid off and they had the title in-hand.
For the insurance quotes, you should be fine to be on your parent's insurance. I don't know FL law, but I'm guessing you only have to provide proof of insurance. Maybe not?
For the quote you got, I'm guessing you're somewhere between 18-22...and with 2 tickets that's why your rate is so high. Sucks...

Yeah, after this, I'm done with private parties. It was and still IS such an annoying, never-ending process. I made my first payment already & haven't even driven it out of the community..
FL State is so unbelievably confused and I'm not used to it. It's hard getting a straight answer from anyone. I'm just going to try and wing it with the insurance & endorsement, unless someone gives me a helpful answer, which is highly unlikely.
As for my age, yes I'm 19. It's very unfortunate that people in the 18-22 category, who are good drivers, have to have such high rates; it's also unfortunate that other have to pay for an *******s inability to drive safely.
sorry, im basically ranting right now lol

Geez ... this makes me glad I'm 25 and married ... '06 Evo and '06 Scion XB are $176/mo to insure.
It sucks that younger drivers get treated this way be insurance companies. But, it's all based on statistics and younger drivers are more likely to have an accident.
I wonder if they hike up your rates again after you turn like 70? Some of the most dangerous driving I've seen was with an elderly person at the wheel.

Dude... you can get a temp tag & temp insurance to drive the car up to 30 days. Plus if you drive it un-registered, they charge $25 per month late. I feel bad for you that you didnt even look up this information & could have been driving it all along.

^^ you've obviously visited FL. & you're absolutely right.
IMO, it's bc younger drivers think they're invincible and can drive however they want, while in turn, everyone will obey them. unfortunately that type of logic rapes them in the end.
i don't want to say they should take your license away when you hit a certain age, but some of these oldies need to hop out of the 1985 caddy and catch a cab instead. I can't tell you how many careless accidents I've witnessed bc of slow reaction time, or just bc someone was drifting off into oblivion. I love old people, but driving is where I draw the line lol.

I called up both DMV's sooo many times trying to verify information and finally got the answer that I could register it. So I went there AGAIN with all paperwork, only to learn that all original documents are needed and not faxed copies. I was told that by the time the originals got to me, the title would be there, so I just said send it all together. this whole process was the most mind-boggling experience I've ever had car-wise.

Why did you pay off his lien with your loan?
If the seller has a lien on his title there are three options:
1. The buyer pays off the remainder on the lien and the seller sells the car at a discount to compensate for the payoff.
This is very dangerous because once the car is payed off and the lien lifted, the state DMV releases the title quickly. However, the tite will be sent to the seller, basically the seller can screw the buyer and disappear with a paid off car with a title.
2. Have the seller pay off the remainder. This doesn't happen often, because if seller had the funds to pay it off they would do so prior to selling the car.
3. Have the seller contact their bank and arrange the funds transfer through them. This at least protects the buyer.
Good luck.

the transaction is already done with. i wrote out the check directly to his bank, and my bank was announced as the current lien holder. believe me, i covered my ***. the point is, i have the car in my possession, just missing the title. not much either of us can do with one or the other. thanks though
if you have a cheap secondary daily driver make the DD your primary and the evo a pleasure car. My 99 civic is 100 per month with 500 collision 100 comp deductables and the evo is like 115 per month with the same coverage because its "pleasure even though i drive the evo more. Im 21 clean driving record and have state farm
hope this helps
