decel trans noise
So i got my TB 2003 evo 8 about 3 weeks ago and i noticed a noise that seems to be coming from the transmission. It is happens most noticeably in 3rd gear from 4k to around 2.5k and the noise is kind of hard to describe. it is the decel noise that the trans makes but kind of sounds like it crunches/ helicoptors, and is really hard to describe.. it is like this swirling crunching noise. If that makes sense, it just doesnt sound normal.
the car has a cat-back exhaust on it and a k&n filter, but that is all. It has redline mt-90 trans fluid, and mobile 1 10w-30 fully synthetic of course motor oil. The redline was recommended by AMS and i trust their opinion no matter what all the stories behind it are.
can anyone help or have anything similar? i searched for trans noise but just saw posts for the normal small whine it makes when accelerating, and read about the bad whine some people have experienced in the higher gears at the higher rpm's... nothing on decel swirling, crunching, moving, helocoptor like noise... HELP!!! i love my evo

im pretty sure i know what you are talking about.. my gf's evo does the same noise.. she just recently purchased it and i havent had time to try and find the noise.. the noise you are describing is like as if something was rubbing the tire or sumthing under decel... but yea... im going to try and flush the tranny or sumthin.. n see what happens.. anyone else had this happen or experiance this?
its the transmission gears, its normal, it does it on my evo 8 also, and actually this past month a brand new transmission was put in it(for other related issues) and it does the same noise on the new tranny....dont worry about it
PS... its not the death wine... the death wine is a loud whining noise.. at high speed.. the noise i think he is talking about.. is only when the trans is on load from slowing down... pretty much a muffled grinding noise as if a bearing was bad...

your trans is fine...did you change your transfercase fluid or rear? keep that as diaqueen mitsu...........if you did change that..put it back to stock..other than that my car makes the same noise and is fine
the "muffeled grind is exactly what i was trying to describe. i hope it isnt the death whine. i am doing my tc and rear diff this weekend (changing the fluid). But if it is normal as i see throughout the post then it is a LOAD off my shoulders.
and yeah, i picked up the WAY OVR PRICED diaqueen LSD fluid from
... i dont know why they charge arms and legs for these things...
thank you guys for all your help and how quickly everyone responded. each one of you are life-savers. i dont know what i would do without my baby...
i should have got one sooner but money was a bit of an issue when they first came out. Thanks again everyone!!!

here is a video of exactly what "death whine" sounds like https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ht=death+whine im sure its just normal deceleration noise from the tranny.
Could it be a chipped tooth? If one of the gears is chipped, it might be fine during acceleration, but during decel , when the gears are going the other way, you could be hearing the noise. Its a possibility, I guess...
I changed my motor mounts to the AMS mounts, then a week later got my clutch changed and all of a sudden I started getting the same noise. I checked over and over again on different forums, and shops and everyone I have talked to says its the throw out bearing making noise...... It's normal on EVO's.

I had an Excedy street clutch, a front LSD and lightened flywheel from RRE installed in my '03 Evo 10 months ago by a local mechanic. Everything was quiet before the work.
The noise was there when I got the car back. It seems to be getting gradually louder, but the change is so gradual, it's hard to be sure.
The symptom happens during deacceleration on compression. The sound goes from a rattling noise at low rpm to a low-frequency, almost a bell-like sound at higher rpm, when I back off. Slowing on compression from 60-70mph in 5th, I think of it as a bell being cut by a buzz saw. There is no unusual noise on acceleration.
RRE thinks the noise is from the transfer case; backlash in the ring-pinion alignment. Based on their recommendation, I am looking at a $50, 1 lb. can of molybdenum disulfide powder (MDP, 1-5 micron) that arrived yesterday. Dosage is 1 tablespoon per quart of gear oil. I have a can of DiaQueen LSD Gear Oil (90 SAE) and am considering replacing the TC lube with with the DiaQueen spiked with the MDP.
My other thought is to have the ring and pinion backlash checked, but the mechanic who installed it is (ahem!) hard to reach.
Let's stay in touch as we work through the problem.
