Its not a problem its just the dynamics of the EVOs drivetrain. Mine has done this for 80k miles, my GF's for 50k miles and every other EVO I have ever riden in yes even 100 mile brand new IX's. It did get more noticable after the clutch an light flywheel but it was surely noticable before. Dont stress it you car is fine.

There is an Info Bulletin from mitsu about the decel noises

Here is a link to the thread where the TSB from mitsu is posted

DONT STRESS IT> ITS A RACE CAR NOT A LEXSUS

Similar story...

I wouldn't be concerned if the deaccel noise following the LSD/lightened flywheel install was a previous sound that became louder.

The fact is that there was no similar noise before. I read the TSB (thanks!) and grinding or whining does not come close to describing it.

The racket is LOUD. Perhaps an improved description is a buzz saw with a loose blade cutting a bell.

i think the noise got a little quieter for me, or i just got used to it, after i changed the T-case. I did the tranny, engine oil cuz it was time to, and rear diff as well. I think i just turn the radio a little louder now and just dont notice the noise.

when we all buy our first evo i think many of us are scared something may be wrong, or the previous owner, or test drivers, may have beat on it a little too hard, lol. Its all in our heads i think, most of the time at least...

my buddy has a WRX, it makes the same noise... he said his has been doin it since he got it almost 60k ago. and im only at 40k, so im not worried... I guess when i get a lightened flywheel ill have to turn the radio up that much more, lol!!!

i dont know if u guys are talking about the same noise, but mine Evo makes some noise too, and i am concerned about it.. I have 2 more months of warrenty, so i should check it out..
my Evo doesnt make any noise while i'm on gas, brake or clutch.. when i'm slowing down, and i let go off the gas, i hear a noise like hard breaking... I know the engine is suppose the break since it's manual, but this noise is a bit too high for breaking... it sounds like brembo discs + cheap pads.. when i hit the break, the noise stops. i'll try to record it soon... I hope it's not a biggie.

It is the clutch. I have the Exedy stage 1 organic, and the "grinding" noise during decel has happened since day one after the clutch install (AMS). Bothers me sometimes, but I got used to it. Stock clutch makes this noise but you REALLY have to listen for it.

Decel clutch noise

just had my clutch replaced a month ago (AMS) and the same sound is annoying me even when i put the radio louder......there is no problems while driving but when engine braking its loud..it almost sounds like your taking an aluminum can and touching it to a grinder or somthing but much more faint....
All fluids were changed as well as new Throw out bearing, new kart boy hangers and motor mounts...I've triple checked the entire exhaust for vibration to the chassis and found nothing.. i really don't know what it is...Is it because of the cheap Exedy Organic clutch?? Do those higher priced Exedy clutch do these also??

Mine does the exact same thing...slight grinding noise when decelerating from 4k rpm down to about 2k. Glad to know its normal...mine has been doing that noise, and apart from the annoaynce, I don't see anything wrong with it so far.

It started when I changed to excedy clutch...

Glad I read this thread. I was almost ready to call Mitsubishi and ask them if that was normal. Glad to read it is normal and I can stop wondering about it all the time.

I know I'm bringing this back from the dead but I wanted input from the people in this thread that have had the sound for a few years now.

I have a noise that comes during decel or very light throttle between 3k-4k and only when in gear. I can coast down from 150mph out of gear and have no noise at all so I don't think its the xfer case. I can rev the engine through this range and its as clean sounding as can be. But when in gear 3/4 at cruise around 4k rpm I can get a sound similar to that of a ball bearing in a paint rolling around. I am on the stock clutch and the car has 20k miles. The sound got 10x louder after installing a front motor mount.

Has anyone had negative fall out from this or is it still considered normal?

A lot of us have the same issue, and it seems lighter flywheel makes it louder.
No one has really reported any direct issues other than the annoying noise.

It's seems too loud to be normal IMO. I think its the part that clips onto my hood.
