4 gear has been a problem on bigger road courses where people track there car often. The 6 speed has a problem with heat and 4th gear is thinner and seems to be the one that gives up.

i heard another rumor that you can search and find the answer very easily. The MR 6spd is a little weaker than the 5 spd but nothing you would ever notice. If you were planing on getting serious into drag racing you would have to upgrade it any way.

4th gear is supposedly the weak link that can break. I think you don't have to worry about it unless your car is above 400whp and you track it.

What do you mean by weaker? You mean in terms of power or what? You didn't say exactly WHAT on the MR was weaker other than saying the weakness was caused by the 6spd.

Anyway, all Evos of the same year have the same power output. The only difference in straightline performance is the difference in weight. The MR is heavier than the RS and GSR but lighter than the GSR w/SSL. It also has better stock suspension, but the 6spd is in fact weaker in gears 4-6. However, if you don't road race, which I highly doubt you do, then it will never be an issue.

There's no data to support it. Look at TTP engineering, they drag race a MR, with the fastest stock turbo.

Huh? Yeah, with a 5spd trans after blowing the 6spd, and it's not the fastest stock turbo'd Evo, but it's way up there.

Exactly what Warrtalon said!!! MR's 1,2,and 3 gears are actually stronger than the five speed.......the problem only happens on long road race sessions (I have heard longer than 30 minute sessions)!!

It's not based off the amount of time necessarily. Mine went out on a cool night session after only a few laps, although I had done a 1hr+ session earlier in the evening.

There are no fixes - just bandaids, such as an aftermarket oil cooler or nifty trans fluid concoctions. I didn't bother and put in a built 5spd from Shep.
