Question Newcomer has 2 questions (smelly seat guy)

Hello all.

I am fairly new to this forum and i guess i kicked off my introduction with my smelly seat thread! yes! but now for a more serious topic.

My car is pretty new, only has 3,500 miles on it and one previous owner (as you might imagine).

When i first got my evo it ran great, it was an adreneline rush. I very much enjoyed the torque and i could tell i was hitting boost.

For the past week however I noticed it hasn't been laying me back in my seat like it did the first week i owned it. The only thing i think of is that i have removed the airbox top and filter ocassionally and only for a mile or two to show my friends the noise of the bov (which as we all know is quite muffled by the stock airbox) I probably did that about 4 times. Did this somehow affect the MAF sensor or chip? That seems far-fetched, but from what i read on the forums i doubt its boost leak, seeing as the car only has 3,500 miles on it.

Or could it possibly be that i've already grown accustomed to the power? that part i sincerely doubt b/c i can still feel it hit boost once in awhile... i dont have a boost gauge im going by feeling only, and comparing to the exhilaration i initially felt.

Two birds with one stone, as a final question... mitsu's 5,000 mile service.. that seems a bit long for an oil change compared to other manufacturer's recommened oil change. I assume with mobil 1 pure synthetic thats peachy? I mean i wouldn't see why they wouldn't want you to do it every 3,000 that would be more money for them, i just never heard of that before.

Thanks in advance (this is a pretty awesome community so far!)

Power and speed are similar to drug addictions: it can continuously take more and more to elicit the same euphoria eventually. It's easy enough to pull the MAF and clean it with a little CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner. You could also try resetting the ECU in case you messed up some sensor values by running it without the filter.

You'll find oil change opinions vary greatly on this board. IMO, unless you're running the car hard consistently, or do a lot of short trips, city driving, etc, you're fine with the 5K oil changes.

Pull the cable off the positive terminal of the battery and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery like mentioned above. Also i change mine every 3k regardless. Better to make sure its done every 3k and not potentially blow your engine.

Think u might of gotten accustomed to the power, same thing happen to me after about 3 thousand miles. And about your oil change, i do mine every 3,000 But thats just me, i do it cause it makes me feel good. 5,000 just seems way to long.

Oil change intervals are a matter of preference. 3,000 miles is an old rule of thumb that is now obsolete but still often followed, largely because there is no research group out there that stands to gain from challenging the status quo. Modern synthetics can last many more miles. Here is a very interesting read...

+1. My car is in the shop getting a clutch done and they found a nasty kink in the LICP coupling and on the rubber cap that was capping off the old connection for the factory boost controller. I thought the car felt a little sluggish and they found the reason why.

When I first got the car I took off the box too to show off to my friends. I got scared though after reading that water could somehow still get in.

I would agree with you getting used to the power. However, I would also check that none of the clamps got loose. Never hurts to make sure.

why would you remove the air filter just to hear the bov??? i guess the risk of damaging your turbo or engine doesnt matter just so you can take your buddies out to hear your bov. if i were you i would first reset the ecu (take positive terminal off of battery for 10 min. re install it and let the car idle for five minutes). if that doesnt fix it, do a boost leak test. may also want to get a boost gauge to see if you are even hitting full boost.

You have gotten used to the power, it seems. Just to be sure, re-set the ecu.

Also, if you feel more comfortable getting an oil change at 3K; do it. I did that with mine. What the hell, it is your car.

G/L with it, but don't be removing your box anymore and driving around with the car sucking in sheeyot...

If you really want to hear the PSSH just a cone filter and a maf adapter. I wouldnt take my air filter out just not worth it you never know what you might suck up right into the turbo.

Hey LoBoost thanks for the reply, i like that suggestion as an alternative to an intake which could potentially void my warranty. Where would one buy a cone filter and maf adapter, i tried googling but with no solid results. Also how hard would that be to install? thanks.
