new guy here, questions re: EVO III / IV
Hey folks! Glad I found y'all here. I've spent a few hours cruising around the forum, and it looks like there's alot of y'all who really know your stuff! I hope I can contribute a little myself.
me: I'm old school. Spent alot of years building and drag-racing domestics (Mainly GM, with a few Fords thrown in here and there). I've also spent alot of years road-racing motorcycles. So I know my way around, mechanically speaking. However: I'm new to Evos, and even to Turbos. OF course I understand the principals.... but not the subtleties yet. I hope to learn alot from y'all.
the car: I have an old japanese classic that I've been trying to decide what to do with. I've narrowed it to 2 options: an LS1/T56 combo swap, or an AWD EVO swap. And so here I am.
My specific question immediately are this:
I see JDM half-cuts on Ebay regularly. less than 3K gets me an EVO III. $3500 gets me an EVO IV. (higehr than that gets more expensive..... significanly more. So what's the difference between the two?
I've done a little searching, but there's not alot of info on the III. I see people posting about the IV here and there, and I know it was not available as a USM car. It seems though that parts are still available.
Here's my goals with it: I'm looking for no more than 500hp (the car won't weigh more than 2500lbs) and I can get the last 100hp of that with the bottle, if I have to. though I'd rather not. I want it to remain driveable, so my wife and I can cruise in it on the weekends.
help me out abit, will ya?
TIA
Dan

Well, this forum is made mostly of US member and the USA didnt get the III or the IV.
Alot of DSMers upgrade to III turbos and manifold, so you might have some more luck at a DSM forum like DSMtuners.com

Diamond Star Motors. Basicall all teh cars that were made as a joint venture between Mitsu and Chrysler. This includes 1st and 2nd gen Eclipse, talons and Lasers, all which used 4G63T motor, the same in the EVO.

the evo 3 and all USDM DSMs (Ellipse talon laser) have the engine oriented so that the cam gears are on the driver’s side from the evo 4 up the engine was flipped putting the trany on the other side, the head was redesigned so that the exhaust was still in the front (thus backward from the pre 4 design) so the 3 back and USDM cars are compatible and the 4+ cars are not.

Your HP goals are possible the bottle is not really needed, with a mild build 1g rods 2 g slugs pre 92 DSM block 20g or 30 series garret turbo 264/272 cams front mount balance shaft removal 255 walbro 850cc injectors and a DSM link you should be making 400+ tuning more aggressive cams ported head and sheet metal intake 35 series garret or fp red and better rods and pistons you can make 500+ horsepower and still drive the car.

You can also do a hybrid 4G63 / Auto. GM Transmission with the above Adapter Plate. You can PM me if you have any other questions.
