Ix Vs Mr
The HID things confuses me. The original Evo VIII came with HID lights standard, but the Evo IX does not unless you buy the most expensive models. Why they would remove such a feature from the standard Evo makes no sense. Taking it off of the RS I can understand since that is supposed to be a stripped down car, but not the standard Evo IX.

I'm glad I went with the MR. The 6 speed does require you to be a better driver, but I don't mind. (That is except on the infield track at Texas Motor Speedway where I am forced to upshift for the last several seconds of the front straight...)
i am glad i live in greece!evo's here have 6speed manual, bilstein coilovers&much more!it's something like us mr's but they called gsr...so when i get one i won't have to decide
!but if i was in us i would get an mr with jdm rear spoiler!what's an mr with se package anyway?

My vote goes toward the SE... Many of the MR's options with the proven 5 speed, that can handle a road course temps better than the 6 speed.
Some of the SE's options that you get over the gsr are, HID's, aluminum roof, se wheels, se lip, and red stitching, plus a few other things.

Proven 5-speed? They have many synchro issues and many more have been rebuilt then the 6-speed has.
i have a regular tb ix , i couldve had a MR edition easly. but at the time i was new with knowledge of evos and heard the six speed was weak and i didnt see the need to spend another 5k for a 6speed and a vortex generator and sum other lame options that probaly woulda got changed anyway. wheels/gauges ect.. Anyway if i could do it over again i woulda saved sum money and went with a ww evo rs. I find myself more and more into drag racing and that would of been the appropriate application for me!
Wow that is wrong. The 6 speed certainly has the topend. MR can do 165+ from the factory, that is at 7000 RPM's too. The Evo VIII 5-speed is superior for the 1/4 mile but when you are talking about stock turbo and pump gas the 6-speed is ok. LARGER turbos like a 35R where you may need to shift into 5th will slow your *** down.
Inneedof drives an MR and has seen the issues I have had with mine personally. The 6 speed had a 5th gear crunch from the factory and the whole thing went south because of a $0.40 spring. It managed to burr the slider, damage the syncro, and caused uneven wear on 5/6.
4-6th are 14mm wide and its amazing that more of them havent broken at near stock power levels. The 5 speed can be built extremely tough, especially if its an VIII box with the IX input shaft and 1st gear. You end up with the biggest gears possible from 1-4 and have a fairly inexpensive fix. The only thing about the 6 speed that is more expensive is the 1-2 gear cluster HAS TO BE BOUGHT WHOLE even if you only need a few pieces like springs or syncros. It lists for over 1200 as I recall.
The 4th gear ratio is virtually identical in the IX's between the 5 speed and the 6...it is only different in the VIII. The info about the 1/4 mile time being better is incorrect. Mileage is also better with the 6 as was pointed out.
3rd is 19mm and will not fail like 4th and up

shifting into 5 in the 1/4 also sucks a ton
ok so with all that being said the evo is going to be my daily driver along with my bike, im not going to mod it too heavily, (350whp sounds pretty reasonable) because i want it to still be reliable, i'll have the occasional track day here and there other than that just canyon runs and dd
^^You might enjoy the MR then. I put out right around that much power and I love my tranny. Just be sure to change the fluid at correct intervals and warm it up before beating on it and it will be good. Also for some on the non-educated people in here (which is quite a few obviously) The 6sp has a higher topspeed (hence the longer 6th gear over the regular 5sp). It also gets better gas mileage...the rating for some reason is off. 1-3rd gear is also stronger than the 5sp, they are thicker. 4th and 5th tend to be the weakest mainly because of overheating issues. The 6sp is not as weak as its played out to be. Most the people that break it drive VERY hard/race alot or have high power levels (excess of 400whp). Alot of people that bust 4th road racing either are using crap fluid (BG, Synchromesh, Redline, etc) or stock fluid that has high mileage. You will find that some of the bigger Vendors/Companies that race the 6sp use Motu, Amoil, or the European Castrol fluid (stock fluid in Vipers). I have not heard of 1 failure with anybody that is using those higher end synthetics. One such person for example is the Mynes road race car that is a stoked 2.3 GT35 that makes alot of HP and has drag raced it and road raced it countless times and its going strong. Indeed the 5sp is ultimately stronger but remember most of the tranny breakage whether is be 5sp or 6sp has to do with ownership. In JB's case he read "drive it like you stole it" too literal when he bought the car

are there any TSB's on the tranny of the MR?
what is the powertrain warranty from the factory?
are there any aftermarket upgrades for the MR tranny to prevent any failures?
sorry for the questions, im an Evo newbie.........

.IX SE is the best evo out period, as far as value and options go. People on this forum know the deal when it comes to the SE.
