Introduction and questions about IX SE purchase
Hey guys,
New to the forums, have been researching EVOs for about a month or so. So up here in the north west (Seattle area) we're very dominated by Subaru. I personally cannot stand Subaru styling (just not my style). Unfortunately though, this makes finding EVOs very difficult in this area. I've been very actively looking for about 2 weeks and coming up fairly empty.
One dealer up here wanted to sell me a black MR for 40k! Most dealers just don't seem to get it up here...
So I've finally located a possible purchase, but wanted to get some suggestions on what I should look for in it. The stats on the car are as follows:
2006 Black IX SE (has the MR front bumper, leather interior, but 5 spd so I think it's the SE)
- 26k miles
- Doesn't LOOK modified (other than powder coated rims), but sometimes it's hard to tell
- Very well taken care of in appearance (which leads me to believe it's been well taken care of in maintenance as well)
Now the huge concern for me is that it has 26k miles on it. I'd like to get lower mileage, but at this point beggers can't be choosers. I'm also carless due to a wreck on the freeway, so I'm ready to have a car again.
So, on to my questions:
1. Since there are 26k miles, what regular maintenance items should be coming up or should have been done?
2. What specific things would tell me if the car has been abused?
3. What would a reasonable price be for this car?
4. What should I request to be done to it before I purchase it? (change all fluids... Anything else?)
Also, in terms of warranty, what do I need to know? If I can't tell if anything is modified (don't really have anything to check the tuning...), then should I have the dealer commit in writing to the warranty? I don't want to get stuck out in the cold with this car. I've got no reason to believe anything is going to go wrong with this car, but I worry a little bit with a car this expensive (expensive for me obviously, not for a lot of you I'm sure).
Also, any particular experiences or information that might be similar to my situation would be appreciated!

What rims are they that they're powder coated?
1) All fluids changed, tires rotated, etc. (Basically make sure the 25K service was done). If you not, maybe ask yourself if you can do it to save you some labor money.
2) Look for spliced wires near the ECU (under the dash on passenger side), look for bolts that have been rounded (You can tell if they've been wrenched). Just be sure to look the car completely over and note anything out of the ordinary (ie. missing bolts, brackets gone, etc.)
3) I know IX's are in KBB for about 28K with about 11-12K miles. I would probably talk them down to the 24-26K range if you're ballsy. I picked mine up with 18K miles for around that much.
4) Basically ensure that general maintenance be done on the car, (ie. new spark plugs, fluids, new tires if you think the ones on there now are close to being shot), brakes checked for wear limits, etc.)
Don't expect to have a warranty left on the car. Typically they will throw on an extended warranty with the car to avoid the hassles with Mitsu but that is a decision you have to make on whether or not you think you'll have warranty issues. It's like a game of craps in Vegas, you win some or you lose all the time. I opted for the extended warranty on mine and am now in the process of cancelling it and getting my refund for it. I figure I can do all the work myself or have a local speed shop do it for me and save myself the short fuse blow-offs that I have. (My therapist doesn't like me having anger management issues.)
Good luck with your purchase and go in knowing you're making the right choice in a car. I have every confidence you did your homework and you'll have many years of enjoyment with it.
Feel free to hit me up if you have any other questions about the car after you inspect it if you're uncomfortable about something.
I looked my car over with a fine tooth comb before I committed to anything. I can empathize with your feelings of uneasiness right now. Rest assured, you'll do just fine... There's nothing like the first drive home in an Evo...
