At least he asked before he got the car. Sounds like he's starting to do some research on a car he's not familiar with which is good. IMO Always start in 1st gear from a dead stop. Rolling is debatable, but sometimes its ok. Like when I go over speed bumps near my complex... if I still have enough momentum after I go over the bumps, I keep it in second. Never from a dead stop though...
+700 of everything he said.

There is no reason to do it, so you shouldn't even want to do it. But if you do it on accident, don't be too concerned, its not going to nuke your clutch unless you do it a bunch. I have (accidentally) started in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, in both the Evo and the Porsche I'm lazy and forgetful. It is a lot easier in the Porsche (more low-end torque, like everyone has been saying), and from the feel, also causes less damage to the clutch. The Evo is a PITA to start in 3rd and 4th, but I still had the stock clutch at 53k miles when I sold it, and it was still gripping strong.

Basically, starting higher than 1st can be thought of as doing the same amount of damage as launching, without the coolness/speed of launching... It may do more or less depending obviously on how much power you're giving it and how much you're on the clutch, but still.

Regardless, there's no point in doing it, unless you're on ice or snow, or stuck in the mud etc (or starting from a roll, or push starting your car, since it is generally easier to push start in 2nd than 1st)

I have a slight slope in my driveway so I go into second. But it just depends really

Of course third in my car is probably like second in your car, as I have the JDM close-ratio R.S. gearbox. And I am releasing the clutch once the car is rolling down a 35* slope.

Otherwise, as the other guys say...you're gonna need a new clutch sooner than later, buddy!

No it's not, he stated his age in a previous thread he started.

Note: I'm not really sure what your question is, I just answered it the way I interpreted it.

The question may have not been the best, but come on now... You guys (not talking to everyone here) are talking about how immature he is, while acting is such ways yourselves. You don't need to be so mean, I'm sure you all have asked a question that others had thought to be stupid as well & were treated like sh*t. It doesn't mean that you guys are allowed to be dicks because of it. You guys are the ones that need to "grow up."

IMO, it was a reasonable question, assuming it came from someone who's only driven a manual on trucks. Somebody already explained the concept of a granny gear and answered the question. This will close shortly.
