Not trying to be an a$$ but, if you don't know the answer to this question then you probably should not be driving an Evo.

Use 1st gear.

The honest answer would probably be that the truck has more torque at a lower RPM than the Evo, so getting it to move in 2nd is easier. I COULD do it in my Nissan 240sx, but I wouldn't do it in my Evo and I didn't do it when I put the SR20 in my 240sx.

it will be abusive to the clutch because you will have to slip it a lot in order to make the car roll fast enough and not have it stall.

Only vehicle I have seen starting in a gear other than 1st justified is a semi tractor without a trailer.

So how long has this poor truck been taking this abuse?

It depends on the gearing. I have an 02 Sierra 2500HD and I start in 2nd unless I'm towing. If you start in first, you need to shift before 10 mph. It's a "granny gear" and severely slows down your acceleration. The truck will easily pull from 500-600 rpm, so starting in 2nd and shifting to 3rd at about 20-25 mph works great.
