New member looking at an Evo 8.

New member here.

A little background info. I currently own an '89 Mustang (hence the username) that has a couple of mods and a '06 Maxima SE that is my daily driver. I use to own a '02 WRX and daily drove that for 5-1/2 yrs. It had a couple of mods, nothing too crazy, but it got me hooked on AWD and turbo cars. I'm sick of the Maxima so I started looking at AWD cars again and that brought me to the Evo.

I'm currently looking at a 2005 Evo 8 at a local car lot.

It was traded in by the original owner. It has 23,000 miles, the leather package which includes the powered moonroof, upgraded stereo, etc. As for mods, as far as I can tell it has a straight pipe (no cat) and a magna-flow muffler and a K&N intake. I didn't see a boost controller and it doesn't look like one was installed but that can be put back to stock pretty easy.

It drove good. The clutch pedal seemed to release really high which after reading the forums sounds normal. The salesman did say that the 2nd and 3rd gear syncros has been replaced which in my eyes could mean it was beat on or was owned by a ****ty manual driver.

They are asking $23,900. Which seems to be around what they are listed for on Trader but IMO a little high for the car especially since its modded and it has no warranty.

Does it sound about right price wise? Anything else to look for? Do the '05's have any known problems?

Thanks!

Hmm sounds a little sketchy to me. From what I've been told about Evo clutches is when they release really high the clutch is on its way out. Probably the previous owner beat on it and broke the synchros in the tranny and now the clutch is ready to take a dump. I think if you look around some more you can find a better deal. Its never a good idea to buy someone elses headache, expecially if its already modded and if they won't give you any kind of warranty. The biggest problem with any Evo is too many hard launches will hurt the center diff and trans and this one sounds like no exception. Cutch jobs are a huge pain on them as well. Good luck.
