evo reliability, and things to look for when buying one??

hey so i already posted a thread about exactly what evo to get. but before i decide i want an evo for sure i need to know how much its gonna cost me to maintain it, and what things too look out for when buying a used one.
so how much do you usually pay per month? per year? both on regular maintenance and repairs?
and if im buying one for 18k or so with say 50,000 miles what kind of things should i look for that might cause problems? what are these cars weak points? and what kind of stuff should have been replaced by now or what will need replacing?

im coming from a b5 s4 so i think nomatter what im gonna be spending a bit less on maintenance so ill be happy. i just dropped 3300 on it today for new control arms, new timing belt, and some other small things. i had to replace the tranny, clutch and flywheel which cost around 8 installed. and another 5 or 6 grand split up here and there on other stuff that broke. and ive only owned it for 2 years.
and it sucks cause its the hardest car to work on.

im gonna be 20 when i get the car, my dad said he will put the evo under his name on insurance, and out land cruiser under my name to make it cheaper for me. but really nomatter what car i get, if its sporty at all, its still gonna be expensive for insurance, i think thats just something you have to deal with when your really young.

whats all included with the 60k mile tune-up?

50K huh? if the tranny is good and you are getting it for a really good price (5-6K less) then I suggest you replace all the suspension bushings, change the driveline fluids, get a clutch, then rip out the engine and send it to JAM

You'll have a much better car with beefy internals which will be much better than what came w/ the factory.

That's for crap, spend a few more bucks and get one with less miles. Evo's if not taken care of can be very expensive to maintain.

evo 8 about to hit 63k and no problems. Maintanence is easy if you know how to work on cars until you start getting into big problems. The timing belt change is a *****!!!!! So watch out when buying a car thats close to 60k mileage

how much are you usually spending? this is what im most concerned about. like i said im not looking to have some crazy 450whp monster or anything, maybe just a good 320-350 whp at most.
like how much is the timing belt change, and the other things that you need to do in that tune up?
if i cant find one under 50 in my price range, should i look for one over 60k miles with it already done?

The whole 60k service probably cost close to 1000 parts and labor. But if you know how to change your own fluids then all you have to worry about is the timing belt and spark plugs. Spark plugs are easy to change. Timing belt is tough and I would just get someone to do it if you dont know how. Its 220 for labor from a shop (dont go to dealership) and probably 350 for parts.

wow thats like what i pay for normal service like 3 times a year.
if that 60k service is considered a major service, then im gonna be very relieved.

The thing to remember about any tuner is that it can be fast or it can be reliable. If you keep it close to stock then you're not going to be spending as much on maintanence. But if you start to mod it then you can expect things to break and get worn out and that's when you're going to have to start paying...
